Just a reminder that allowed nutrition visits are per calendar year and will not extend into 2011.   If you have some left, please contact me soon to schedule an appointment.  We are almost booked for 2010 so don't hesitate.

Also for those of you who did not get to catch me on WADK with John Wood from The Green Grocer a few weeks back, we are working on getting another one out for this coming saturday.  I will keep everyone posted via my facebook page.   Not our friend on there yet, here is a handy-dandy link.

I want to talk about pea shoots.  For no reason other than I bought them yesterday, and I'm eating them right now.   I thought, "mmmm man these are yummy", and so there it happened.  I'm sharing my delectable salad with all of you.

If you've never had pea shoots before, please stop reading right now and put them on your shopping list.

At only 5 calories per cup, pea shoots are little nutrient powerhouses.  They are packed with phytochemicals,  vitamin A,  vitamin C, folic acid and vitamin K.

Visit www.peashoots.com for loads of recipes.

Natural Health

Here is a great excuse to eat your pumpkin pie & feel great about doing so.  Cinnamon, one of the ingredients in your pie, actually has numerous health benefts.  Did you know that a teaspoon of cinnamon is comparable in antioxidants to a 1/2 cup of blueberries or 1 cup of pomegranate juice?   It helps to fight inflammation leading to atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease, helps to decrease pain associated with arthritis, can help lower blood sugar, cholesterol, and blood pressure.  High five little pumpkin pie making friend.

A 2007 study in the Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed that combining cinnamon with a high-carbohydrate food helped lessen the impact on blood sugar.  It is explained that the effect of slower gastric emptying resulted in lower rise in blood sugar.

Add cinnamon to all your favorites:  yogurt, protein shakes, cereal, oatmeal, unsweetened applesauce, chicken dishes, stirfy, meatloaf (yup I dump it right in), squash, and any baked goods you are mixing up.  Be creative, you may find a new favorite.

If your doctor said "well you have a choice;  you could add cinnamon to your oatmeal, or I could just put you on these blood pressure and cholestrol medications", what would you do?

Join local yoga teacher, Courtnay Meletta on her fundraising journey in support of the South African AIDS crisis. Courtnay has collaborated with the non-profit organization Off the Mat, Into the WorldŽ to raise awareness and increase support for those distressed by the epidemic. There are 2 million AIDS orphans in the nation of South Africa. Most of these children are deprived of basic human rights such as love, shelter, food and education. Without our help, these children will repeat the same cycle as their parents and thus no change will occur. Please join forces with Courtnay and be a part of the change through offering these children the opportunity to have a childhood. Your donation will have a direct impact on the lives of many children by providing shelter, education, tutoring, nutritious meals and the ability to learn life skills, which will make it possible for them to thrive in their communities. Please visit www.yoganewport.com for more details and to donate.
