Hi O!
Man is this a busy month. The RIDA 5K was a great hit again, thanks to all who participated last week. This is an annual event put together by the members of the RI Dietetic Association, and I am honored to continue as a sponsor.
The WASP participants at Renaissance Fitness are doing a great job getting healthy, losing lb's & in the process donating food to the RI Food Bank. The contest ends on April 30th, lets go out with a bang guys!
Alsoooo, Earth day is April 22nd and I am encouraging everyone to do their part in making the earth a better place. Many of you this month have stopped buying bottled water, thank you, thank you, and thank you. (Plus I think stainless steel water bottles look way cooler).
Welcome to all the new readers, and thank you to all the rest for your constant support.
Melissa

Did You Know... Quinoa is a complete protein source & can be eaten at breakfast like oatmeal. |
Nutrition
This one is for all my guys. Some superfoods you should be eating to maintain optimal health.
Whey Protein - adequate protein is necessary for muscle growth & increased metabolism.
Tomato Sauce - contains lycopene which helps fight prostate cancer.
Oysters - contain zinc which helps keep testosterone & sperm levels up. 2-3 oysters provide your daily zinc needs.
Cruciferous vegetables (like broccoli) - protect against bladder cancer, which affects more men than women.
Nuts - Vitamin E supports heart health, we want all our men to have good tickers.
Fish - Omega-3 source protecting against heart disease, cancer, stroke, Alzheimers & inflammatory diseases. |

You may not be familiar with Nettle (a.k.a. Stinging Nettle), although you've probably walked right past it many times. Ever been on the cliff walk eh?. Last year we had our very own private family herb tour with momma Lynn, where we learned how to pick (very carefully) and eat nettle. Lynn says if you aren't using gloves, make sure to touch only the top of the leaves as the bottoms contain the hairs that give nettle it's "stinging" nickname.
Nettle is very nutritious & has diuretic and anti-inflammatory qualites, and has been shown to lower blood sugars, blood pressure, treat allergies, asthma, prostate problems, and rheumatoid arthritis.
It can be steamed, added to omelets, salads, sandwiches, drank as tea, etc.

Exercise Time for new kicks? It is recommended that running shoes be replaced every 300-500 miles, or on average every 6 months. Since worn out shoes can lead to increased injury it is important to pay attention to usage. Determining how many miles you run/walk in your sneakers per week can give you a better idea of when those bad boys should be retired. It is a good idea to keep a separate pair of sneakers for everyday use.
What to do with the sneaks? If following these recommendations, we will have 2-3 pairs of sneakers thrown out per person every year, yikes.
