| Happy New Year my friends!
New years always bring about new motivation, new ambitions and new goals. Our gyms seem to be at maximum capacity, and many of our friends are "starting fresh", joining weight loss challenges, and embarking on new health journeys. Whatever your goals may be, I applaud you and am ready to become part of your personal team and help you achieve those goals.
Most of my clients worked with me during the last few weeks of 2009 on reverse New Years Resolutions...Jan 1st became their goal ending date, not starting date! Sound tough? You bet. And so I would like to say to all of you who stayed focused, I know it was difficult, but you did an outstanding job and made some very impressive changes!
I would like to also share with you a story about one client in particular. Alex, 15 years old, first met with me in the fall to see if he could lower his cholesterol (which was 250mg at the time) and bring down his body fat. I met with Alex and his mother several times over the next 10 weeks, during which he was able to make some very impressive changes. He was tested 2 1/2 months later, showing a 100 point drop in cholesterol! He has lost over 30lbs, and is down over 7% body fat...and still going. Needless to say his appointment with the lipidemia clinic has been cancelled, he is feeling and looking amazing, and we are turning him into a powerhouse swimmer! I want all of you to have an "Alex" story, lets kick butt in 2010!

Nutrition Resveratrol
You may have seen this word floating around nutrition magazines and internet articles, but are still unsure exactly what it is. Resveratrol is a polyphenol found in red wine and the skin of grapes, known for its health promoting properties. This antioxidant is so widely researched that I don't have nearly enough room to cover it entirely. Some health benefits include:
- Prevention of heart disease
- Reduction of lung tissue inflammation in COPD
- Reduced risk of stroke (due to improved blood flow to the brain)
- Anticancer activity (multiple cancers including breast, prostate, colon, stomach, pancreas, thyroid, melanoma, ovarian, cervical)
- Reduces "bad" cholesterol
Natural sources of resveratrol:
- Red wine (red wine is fermented with grape skins longer so it has a higher amount than white wine)
- Blueberries
- Cranberries
- Peanuts
Sources: "The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth", Jonny Bowden, Ph.D., C.N.S.

Natural Health You are what you eat, and what you slather on your body
We spend so much time learning what foods help us to stay healthy and fight disease. We try to eat more antioxidant rich foods to help us avoid cancer. We buy organic to ingest less pesticides. Then we slather on chemical laden lotions and shampoos that do exactly what the avoided processed foods would have done.
Ingredients to always avoid:
BHA- causes skin depigmentation
DMDM Hydantoin- caner causing
Oxybenzone- free radical damage to cells
Triclosan- may disrupt growth hormones from the thyroid
Boric acid and sodium borate- unsafe for infants
Dibutyl phthalate, toluene- hormone disruption, cancer concerns
Some safe products:
Shampoo & conditioner- Burts Bees, Aubrey Organics
Toothpaste- Tom's of Maine, Weleda
Sunscreen- Blue Lizard Australian Suncream
Baby Wipes- Seventh Generation unscented baby wipes
