An Adwork Media/Harris Poll of last month indicates that while 64% of Americans aged 55 and above still read a daily newspaper practically every day, the percentages of readership go down with age. 44% of Americans aged 45-54, 36% aged 35-44, and only 23% aged 18-34 read a daily newspaper most days. And 17% of Americans aged 18-34 never read a daily newspaper.
And would readers be interested in paying for newspaper content online?
77% of online adults report that they would not be interested in paying anything to gain newspaper content over the Internet. And even though some may be willing to pay, 19% of online adults only would be willing to pay between $1 and $10 per month, with only 5% saying that they might pay more than $10 per month.
None of us should be surprised that people don't want to pay for things they're used to getting for free - unless they perceive, or actually receive, some value in exchange for their money that they can't receive for free. (See Apple's iTunes or any bottled water manufacturer.)
But if you have, or are considering launching, an adult pay site that offers nothing more than a pretty skin for content that can be easily obtained for free from a tube site, you shouldn't hope to make much money. How are you adding that crucial value that customers can't get for free? Is your content better? More relevant? Cover a niche that can't easily be found for free? If you can't answer those questions, you need to rethink your strategy! |
