Vice President Anne Whatley's dream car is the Aptera. The 2e, available this year, runs exclusively on electricity. Next year's 2h model is a hybrid that can be charged by a standard outlet (110v) or filled up at your local gas station to get 300 MPG.

Hershey|Cause team members are proud to support local farms by patronizing the Santa Monica Farmer's Market every Wednesday. Really, we just feel lucky to be so close by!

Tip of the Month:
Online Event Registration Tools

The mailing of formal event invitations eats up valuable paper and mail costs, not to mention the time it takes to track responses manually. These days, it pays to have a tool that can both accept online payments and help you manage attendee information.
But if you don't have much of a budget, what are your options?

   Greenwashing's Gray Areas

From supermarket shelves to manufacturing processes to corporate sustainability programs, we see and hear more marketing of green every day - but are these brands really all about the environment, or more about the dollars?

It's generally assumed that today's consumers consider the social impact of products before purchasing them. The research on this varies widely, in part because consumers' self-perceptions don't always match up with their behavior patterns. But one thing is undeniable: major brands are jumping on the green bandwagon in very public and often unexpected ways that raise serious questions about authenticity, transparency and accountability in brand communications.

Opinions vary as to what is "greenwashing"?
Greenwashing is usually defined as the promotion of unsubstantiated claims of environmentally friendly products and/or policies, and many argue that it is a pervasive issue that slows and distracts from real sustainability progress. Does any of this sound familiar?

  • "Certified organic shampoo," but certified by whom and why remains a mystery.
  • 100+ page mail-order catalogs advertising sustainable home goods.
  • "CFC-free air freshener." Which is important, because CFCs were banned in 1978.
  • Coal companies spending millions of dollars to promote Earth Day. Read more...

Green Certified
Hershey|Cause recently received Green Business Certification from the City of Santa Monica. After an initial audit of our company's facilities and practices, we were encouraged to hear we were on the right track and eager to learn how we could continue to improve. Today, after some easy but important adjustments, we're using substantially less energy, water and paper than ever, saving money and saving resources.

Visit SMGBC.org to learn more about Santa Monica's Green Business Certification Program and view other green businesses in our area.

Recognizing other green efforts
We also want to recognize two of our current clients, Abode Communities and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation's Rural People, Rural Policy Initiative, for their outstanding efforts to promote sustainability in their fields. Read about their work...
