The Safehouse Has Gone Green
The garden at our safehouse gets bigger every year! Our 2010 crop includes corn, squash, zucchini, cucumbers, tomatoes, green beans, eggplant, carrots, assorted peppers, green onions, watermelon, basil and cilantro. Growing our own herbs and vegetables is great for a number of reasons. First, and most obviously, it cuts down on our food costs. Food banks don't usually carry fresh vegetables, yet women and their children at our house can enjoy organic produce picked minutes before it hits their plate. Second, the kids staying with their moms can try their hands at farming, learning how plants grow and where their food comes from. Third, gardening can be fun for the adult residents, too. Many find it therapeutic and feel a real sense of accomplishment when their plants are ready to be picked. If you have any expertise in gardening and would like to give us a few pointers, call Ami at 404-688-9436. |
School Uniforms Needed While shopping for your children's school uniforms this fall, consider tossing another set in your cart. The kids staying in our safehouse and the children of women using our services are going back to school as well. Most attend DeKalb county schools and need the standard attire, but some may attend other schools as well. Please call Amber at 404-370-7670 for more information about uniforms and sizes needed, or click the donate button to the left to donate cash. Common school supplies such as notebooks, paper, pencils, folders, crayons and glue are also much appreciated. |
Join the Club Have some time to spare? How about spending it with us! Our summer volunteer training begins on July 15th, leaving just one more week to enroll. Through our training, you'll learn the basics of what domestic violence can look like, how it can affect women, families, and communities, and the many challenges women face when trying to rebuild their lives. You will also learn about WRC's unique philosophy in working with women and families and how we partner with agencies throughout the city to make Atlanta safer for us all. Training classes meet for 6 consecutive Thursday evenings beginning next week. Call Kim at 404-370-7670 for more information. |
