WRC's Top Chef
Novis preparing a meal at the safehouseIf you thought a shelter menu could never approach fine dining, think again! Our very own safehouse chef, Novis Cody, will appear on Get Married on the WE network as she competes with another Atlanta chef to impress a bride with her classy southern fare. For the show, Novis represents Vecoma at the Yellow River, where she caters weddings and special events. Holding your engagement elsewhere?  Track down Novis's personal company A Perfected Season. And make sure to watch Get Married on WE (Comcast channel 199) Saturday April 24th at 9:30am.

Or spend a day volunteering at our safehouse for your own taste test!
Law and Order
Police officer, judge, and attorneyIn November of last year, WRC hired an additional legal advocate to serve as Magistrate Court DV Liaison. Asher's job is to connect women seeking warrants against partners who committed crimes against them (battery, property destruction, false imprisonment, etc.) with the many law enforcement officials needed to assist them. Asher coordinates with clerks and judges, police investigators, probation, and community advocates to ensure that DV survivors can have the full protection of the legal system.

Last week a woman came to WRC to file a protective order against her husband. The civil order was granted, but she was so afraid that we suggested she seek an arrest warrant as well. Asher drove her to Magistrate Court and spoke with a judge about her situation. The judge determined that, since the crimes were felonies and because they were committed in the city of Atlanta, an Atlanta police investigator
would need to be contacted for the warrant. A DeKalb County investigator helped the woman make contact with Atlanta PD and persuaded the investigator to come to Magistrate Court to assist. The City of Atlanta issued five warrants for her husband's arrest. Asher was with her through the whole process to provide a familiar face and to make sure that her needs and wishes were clear to everyone involved.
