The Benefits of Play  Living with domestic violence often compromises relationships between mothers and their children because, when mothers are forced to focus on keeping their children and themselves physically safe, they may not have the time or energy to tend to the child's emotional needs. In partnership with Odyssey Family Counseling, WRC is excited to begin offering filial therapy at our safehouse as a way to strengthen the parent/child bond while helping to correct problem behaviors that can arise in children who have witnessed family violence.
Filial therapy is a home-based approach used by play therapists to train parents to be therapeutic agents with their own children. Parents are taught child-centered play therapy principles and skills and learn to create a warm, nonjudgmental, unconditionally accepting and understanding environment in which their child feels safe to explore the parent-child relationship and themselves.
Filial therapy is an empirically supported treatment for meeting the emotional needs of children and bridging the communication gap that is frequently present in today's parent/child relationship. Additionally, children are not limited by their parent's economic situation, work schedule, or transportation limitations if the parent can act as therapist, thus ensuring the benefits of long-term therapy that might otherwise have been inaccessible for lower-income families. |
