A Second Chance The economy has made it difficult for many people to find work, but it is especially hard for women who are rebuilding after violence. Many women we serve have inconsistent job histories because they were not allowed to work. Others have been fired because their abuser called them constantly on the job or they missed too much work due to injuries. Some women have criminal backgrounds because they fought back and were arrested. If your business would consider offering a second chance to a woman staying in our safehouse who is looking for work, please contact Barbara at 404-688-9436. |
Setting the Standard
The staff from Nia's Place just returned from a national conference on supervised visitation and safe exchange. At the conference, a recipient of Nia's Place services spoke passionately about our community's need for a safe, controlled space for children who have witnessed family violence to visit with their parent who has used violence. We were also acknowledged by the federal Office on Violence Against Women for the impact our services have made, though we've been open less than a year. OVW uses Nia's Place as a model for visitation centers around the country, and we're proud that our program is setting the standard for the nation! |
Dressed for Success
Thanks to the DeKalb County School System's Homeless Program, the children staying in our safehouse will start the school year off right!
The Homeless Program assists students and their parents by arranging for school transportation; p roviding funds for the purchase of clothing, band uniforms, and rental of musical instruments; providing school supplies; p roviding funds for required documentation; r eferring children to health services; a nd more. Students staying in our safehouse have already benefited from the program by receiving new school uniforms, including pants, shirts, belts, shoes, underwear and a coat each.
You can help keep the school year bright by donating school supplies, art supplies, and new toys to our children's program. Please contact us at (404) 370-7670 with questions or for drop-off location. |
