Battered Women Starting Over

Sign readingOne day while driving, Dr. Jim Braude saw a woman standing by the street with a sign reading "Battered woman starting over".  He was so struck that he immediately called a friend who is involved with women's causes, who gave him our number.  He was astonished to find that women and their children were staying in shelters or were sleeping on the floor because that was their only alternative to abuse at home.  His new mantra became no one sleeps on the floor.

Since that first phone call, Jim and his partner Rick, an interior designer, have gone to work.  They have appealed to all of their friends and colleagues through a website they created to collect furniture and household items for each family who moves from our safehouse into a home of their own.  Since October, they have fully furnished and decorated 4 homes and have filled our safehouse storage areas with additional furniture for future families.  Jim's message to each of us - one person can make a difference!
A Not-So-Silent Night Off
Card-making suppliesMany of you have faced the challenge of hosting a large family celebration for a holiday, and December in our safehouse is much the same.  32 women and children, plus our 24-hour staff, spend Hanukkah and Christmas with us, and we put a lot of effort into making our house a festive home where families can celebrate safety and togetherness.  Staff give the women a night off from chores, and we cook and clean while the families decorate the house from head to toe.  Garlands line the walls while trees dominate the dining and living rooms.  The children give their learning and play spaces special touches, and everyone enjoys carols and a little too much dessert.  This is a difficult time for women and children to be away from their homes and those they love, so WRC does our best to create an atmosphere of family and to provide support and encouragement each step of the way.
