The Big Picture
Today WRC launches our first online initiative to combat domestic violence: The Big Picture. We hope to use this blog to foster conversation around the larger societal issues that perpetuate violence against women. We will be posting weekly on topics including advertising, movies and video games, fashion, merchandising, and political issues.
Current topics include the graphic advertising used to promote the film Captivity, in which a young women is abducted and tortured, the insistence of some people on blaming victims of violence for their assaults because they did not do enough to "protect themselves", and the recent decision in Italy to require all female police officers to wear high heels as part of their uniforms.
Sign up is not required to read the blog, but we encourage you to sign up for a free google account in the comments section in order to post. |
WRC Sightings In addition to our regular roster of community presentations and health fairs, WRC will be making some special appearances this month. Most notably, Kim Frndak and Patricia Henritze will be part of a panel discussion at the inaugural Women and Girls in Georgia Conference, presented by the University of Georgia's Institute for Women's Studies. They will be discussing the process of creating Snapshots and using art as a vehicle for personal empowerment and social change. For more information on the conference, please visit the Institute for Women's Studies website.
Our Executive Director, Jean Douglas, will also be featured on the Monday, October 15th episode of A Woman's Place on Atlanta Interfaith Broadcasting, where she will discuss how faith communities can effectively respond to domestic violence. The episode will air at 6pm on Comcast Channel 5. |
