Women's Resource Center to End Domestic Violence

August 2007 Newsletter
Hello / Goodbye

Women's Resource Center would like to welcome our two new volunteers from the AmeriCorps VISTA program.  Rachel Faulk and Dorcas Devereux will be joining our staff for the next year, providing support in a number of areas including grantwriting, volunteer coordination, advocacy, and others.  We are excited to have them join our team!

Unfortunately, this time of year also means that last year's VISTAs have completed their terms.  WRC is sad to say goodbye to Emily Rutledge, who is now moving on to her first year at Howard University School of Law.  We wish her the best!

WRC LogoWRC's mission is to create a society where domestic violence no longer exists. We strive to meet the needs of battered women and their children while working toward changing the systems that uphold violence. The foundation of our work lies in the empowerment of all women.

Busy Moms, Busy Kids
Kids at the Park Antoinette Harper has begun to refer to the children staying in our safehouse as her second set of kids.  All summer, Antoinette has been running our Children's Program, and while Mom is working, the kids have kept busy!

"We go to the pool every Thursday," she says, "and we've been to museums, the movies, the park, everywhere!"  About 40 children stayed in our shelter at some point during the summer, ranging in age from toddler to teen.  It is a daunting challenge to keep them all occupied, but Antoinette has risen to the occasion, helping them have fun while addressing the effects of the violence that they have witnessed.

Mark Your Calendars
Candle and Name Mark your calendars for our 16th Annual Candlelight Vigil to be held on October 18th at 7pm in downtown Decatur.

Each October, we commemorate Domestic Violence Awareness Month by remembering those killed in Georgia in incidents of family violence.  Please join us as we remember those lost, celebrate those who have survived, and unite our community in an effort to stop the violence.
