relationship seminar Our relationships are the building blocks of our lives. This seminar examines and explores ways we can heal life long or emotional
patterns that could be getting in the way of us having truly rewarding
relationships. To have
successful and happy relationships we need more than just crossing our
fingers and trusting good luck!
This workshop
will focus on understanding how we show up in relationships, our role in the relationship dance, how to navigate the highs and lows as well as the failure of having a relationship, and getting to the root of issues and understanding the source. The workshop ends with a healing meditation to mend old heartbreaks and opening to love again.
The workshop is designed for singles as well as couples

finding forgiveness
Yoga means to quell the mind. One of the most powerful emotions that
disturb the mind and forces our consciousness away from pure awareness
is enmity. It manifest in many forms such an envy and criticism.
Perhaps the most powerful form of enmity is revenge or resentment as
often there seems to be a justification for it. Dhanurdhara Swami will
discuss forgiveness and explore the possibilities of overcoming deep
resentment from the standpoint of yoga psychology.
Disclaimer: This class is not given to support or justify anyone who
has done something wrong. Forgiving doesn't make a wrong a right.

holotropic breathwork
The word holotropic comes from the Greek root 'holo' meaning "whole,"
and the root 'trepin' meaning "oriented towards". Holotropic means
moving toward wholeness. It is an experiential approach based in
transpersonal psychology and ancient healing traditions. Combining deep breathing techniques, body work and music, the workshop
offers a safe and supportive environment in which to contact our inner
realm and untapped resources.
The use of holotropic breathwork allows release of deeply stored
physical tension, blocked mental tension, stress and anxiety. We can
reclaim our natural creativity, sense of inner peace, a light and
relaxed body, wholeness and spiritual dimensions that often remain
unavailable to us from accumulated tension. This beautiful state is
accessed via the natural and transformative power of the breath. Each
breathwork experience is unique, even after many sessions.
Join us on a healing journey using this transformative yet gentle format of holotropic breathwork.

level 1 - vinyasa yoga teacher training
Our Vinyasa
Yoga Teacher Training - Level 1 is designed for students interested in
deepening their practice and for aspiring or experienced teachers who
are interested in learning about and teaching at Studio Serenity. Our
intention is to support other students, teachers and practitioners
creating a strong personal practice and following their own yogic path.
The Yoga Teacher Training Level 1 program is spread across a six week
period conveniently scheduled only one weekend a month. Our program is
intentionally spread over a longer period of time than other programs
so that students can properly absorb and integrate the knowledge being
learned in a responsible and reasonable way that has the power to
transform their practice and their life.
Teaching
yoga is less about technique, although that is important - teaching yoga
is about inner transformation and exploration, and applying a clear
intention and commitment to the service and growth of others.

welcome new faces at serenity
Elspeth Suthers - studio manager Elspeth began practicing
yoga years ago in her hometown of Seattle, Washington, but fell away
from the practice for years while finishing her degree and serving in
the Peace Corps in Azerbaijan. Shortly after switching Washingtons in
2007, Elspeth discovered Studio Serenity and has been a regular ever
since. She loves the literal and metaphorical balance that yoga brings
to her life, and especially the tranquility of the studio surrounded by
the bustle of DC.
Elspeth completed Studio Serenity's Level 1 Teacher
Training in 2008 and when not on her mat she enjoys cooking, knitting
and spending time with her cat, Prana.
Margaret Ward - yoga instructor What began as a physical
practice to enable more time in her running shoes grew into a mental and
emotional practice to connect to a higher good. Margaret is a 200 Registered Yoga Teacher. She received her 33 hour level 1 teacher training with Tranquil Space Studio in 2007 and her 200 hour teacher training with Hot
Yoga USA in 2008.
Margaret finds great joy in sharing the gifts of
this moving meditation with her students.
She teaches in a safe yet challenging fashion, encouraging her students
to enjoy the freedom of fluidity as well as the strength of grounding. In addition to teaching asana practice,
Margaret also leads a meditation group for veterans diagnosed with PTSD. Beginning
in the fall of 2009, Margaret is studying for her Master's in Maternal and Child
Public Health. Her interests include
yoga as a healing and empowering form of love, as well as hiking, running and
spending time with the kids she nannies.
Vincent Hu - health counselor Vincent is a holistic health counselor, yoga and meditation instructor. He brings
with him more than 10 years of wisdom and experience in the healing and
arts. He first discovered meditation 11 years ago while struggling
with depression and living a stressful sophomore year in college. His
discovery and committed meditation practice led him to experience life
outside of depression, and he learned early on that true healing begins
with self-healing.
Vincent is passionate about sharing
his experience, knowledge and wisdom with others, and inspiring
individuals to take responsibility for their health. Through his
gentle and compassionate guidance, he has helped many individuals
recognize their self-sabotaging habits, reconnect with their authentic
self, and create balance in their lives.

namaste dear yogis, Evolve with Spring! Trees are budding, tender blossoms are blooming,
spring has finally arrived. Evolution is visibly taking place
everywhere around us. Today is also a full moon and simultaneously
marking the holidays Passover and Easter, which are related not only
for their symbolism but also for their position in the calendar. Both
holidays are celebrating the liberation from darkness, winter and
bondage. The annual dates are determined by the same lunar-solar
cycles that have governed the celebrations of our ancestors: Easter and
Passover correspond to the first full moon falling on or after
the spring equinox.
The month of April brings a liberating moon and we at Studio Serenity
designed workshops and events for you to cleanse, release and restore
on deeper levels. Our seminar on "Finding Forgiveness" on April
17th highlights an inquiry into the places where we may be holding on
to something against ourselves or somebody else, so that we can create
space, let go and find more personal freedom. For transformation to be
genuine, not only do we need to free ourselves from external problems,
oppression or darkness, but even more so from those places where we
close ourselves off internally.
This is what we practice on the mat over and over, witnessing the
stumbling and the grace, the love and the fear, busy thoughts and deep
states of peace. What an amazing practice it is, so simple and yet so
profound. Sometimes I wonder at the mystery of this as we witness
people all over the world falling in love with yoga.
As the founder of a
yoga studio in Washington DC, I have been motivated by the desire to
create a conscious community in the heart of the capital and also by
the burning question, how can we accelerate evolutionary consciousness
and move away from conflict, violence, war, and consumerism? How can
we create awareness, non-violence and greater joy and happiness? What
I love about yoga is that these questions are not abstract, but we have
practices that are applied: that heal intimate relationships, the heart
of the individual, and from there extend further into the community,
the environment and the planet - yoga offers tangible practices and
actions, and simple, teachable skills.
As the moon in Libra shines its potent light on relationships this
spring, we offer our seminar "Relationships", an unique opportunity to examine
the pieces that keep our hearts closed and how we recognize barriers
and trust to open again. Join this remarkable evening on May 7th, a
unique opportunity to look at what may be holding you back and allow
you to move forward with more trust and confidence.
The ancient verse "May all beings be happy and free" - Loka Samasta
Sukhino Bhavantu (Loka = world; Samasta = the whole or together;
Sukhino = in happiness; Bhavantu = let there be) and pertains to the
vision of evolved consciousness.
It is the hope or wish that we all
carry, that we may be liberated from the fractured consciousness that
is currently dividing our planet. With yoga, we can stretch ourselves
past self-imposed limits, dare ourselves to re-conceive ideas, open our
hearts to the possibility of love and peace actually happening in our lives.
Many of us dream of the day when love and peace may prevail on earth,
when we as a species evolve past unhappiness, resentments and ego. May
our practice and today's full moon remind us of our awakened state and
may we continue to serve the flowering and evolution of consciousness, on and off the mat. I hope to see you at the studio this spring, dear friends, and that our classes keep your practice strong and tend your heart and fire.
With light and love,
Katja & the Serenity Team
