Happy New Year! And we hope that 2010 is a fantastic and exciting year enjoying all the outdoor activities and fun things to see and do in Texas!
We'd like to offer our sincere thanks and appreciation to all of the Texas Outside members, visitors, and advertising clients who contributed to making it another outstanding year for Texas Outside. In 2009, Texas Outside:
- remained ranked as the "#1 Outdoor Recreation Website in Texas" by Ranking.com
- was shocked when Frommer's (the well respected leading international travel guide) listed Texas Outside as "The Best of Texas Online"
- set all new records with over 97 million hits, 26 million page views, and 2.2 million outdoor enthusiasts who visited Texas Outside looking for fun things to see and do
- maintained an excellent advertising client renewal rate by providing click through rates that were 5 to 50 times higher than the industry average
- added hundreds of new pages of content on everything from airborne adventures to zip lines
And 2010 is starting off with a big bang - traffic in January is a whopping 30% above last January, we've reviewed some fantastic golf courses, lined up some fun things to do during 2010, and most important, we welcomed a new 8.5 pound grandson to Texas - can't wait to take him camping, hiking, boating, and exploring Texas!
Thanks for your help during 2009. We appreciated your comments, funny and informative emails, and your ideas on new places to visit and add to Texas Outside.
This newsletter will highlight some of the favorite and best things that we discovered and enjoyed in 2009 - we hope it gives you some ideas on where to spend some of your time in 2010. It's been awhile since we last did a newsletter (we've been much to busy having fun and adding and updating stuff on Texas Outside), so this newsletter will be a little long - grab a cold drink, plop down in an easy chair next to the warm fire, get some popcorn, turn on some country music, and take your time reading this monstrosity! I hope you'll find it worth it!
Have a great year. Have fun & GET OUTSIDE! Let us know about your new discoveries!
Thanks Again, Mike & Susie Sharp Texas Outside

We didn't do a lot of hunting and fishing in 2009 but we did enjoy a fantastic hunting and fishing lodge and added a lot of new content on fishing and hunting in Texas.
- Falcon Point Lodge - what a great time we had at this fantastic lodge. Sitting on 6000 acres along the shore of San Antonio Bay, Falcon Point Lodge is excellent for a hunting, fishing, birdwatching, or a weekend escape. The service is great, the food is scrumptious gourmet, and the amenities are excellent. Click on the link to the Lodge to find out why we liked this upscale lodge.
- Fly Fishing In Texas - check out this page for info on fly fishing guides, fly fishing rivers and flow, and some other good stuff about fly fishing - we didn't go fly fishing but it was fun creating this page
- Fishing Cabins - we discovered a couple new places in 2009 that are perfect for a few hours sleep during a fishing trip.
- Hunting Guides, Freshwater Fishing Guides, & Coastal Fishing Guides - these guys will help you land a trophy or send you home with enough fish or game for a party - Capt. Mike O'Dell took the son-in-laws out for a morning and they brought home and cooked a fantastic dinner of redfish, drum, and trout - yummy!

Seems like we took off just about every weekend in search of something fun to see and do in Texas. We documented a few of the weekends in Thank God For Weekends and Weekend Adventures and we created reviews and other articles about the trips. Some of our favorite weekend trips included:

I admit it, we (Mrs Texas Outside, my brother, son-in-law, and grandkid) are addicted to golf and if we don't play at least once a week we get crabby, depressed, and aren't a lot of fun to be around. 2009 was a banner golf year - we played lots of outstanding new Texas courses, enjoyed some great Stay & Plays and golf resorts, and visited some fantastic golf destinations (Panama City Beach, Aspen, and Scottsdale). None of which helped our game but did force us to apologize a number of times, spend lots of money on new clubs and golf balls, and go through lots of Advil and sun screen - I still can't figure out why we continue to play this expensive and frustrating sport! Here is just a sample of some of the best of 2009:
- Texas Outside Top 25 Texas Courses - we added a lot of new courses to the top 25 in 2009, some of which include: San Antonio's La Cantera Resort courses, the Quarry in San Antonio, Newport Dunes in Port Aransas, and Redstone in Houston. Read our golf course reviews to learn why we liked these courses.
- Golf Stay & Plays - over the last 12 months, we particularly enjoyed the courses and stay and play accommodations at Blaketree National and Links at Lands End.
- Golf Resorts - we were lucky enough to get to spend some time enjoying the courses, spa, restaurants, pool, and other fantastic amenities at some fantastic Texas golf resorts - La Cantera in San Antonio and the Woodlands just north of Houston.
Check out our Golf Home Page for course reviews, golf locator maps, coupons, golf vacations, stay & plays, golf resorts, and lots more golf information, links, and articles. |
With three grandkids we had a lot of good times letting them entertain us on some kids weekend excursions - and the old folks sure enjoyed what would normally be considered "for kids only!" To continue exploring Texas with the grandkids, we created a Kids Activities Page and started documenting some of our fun trips as well as adding some to the "to do" list. Here were some of the best adventures with the grandkids in 2009:
- Texas Renaissance Festival - you and the kids need to experience this fun and unique festival at least once - go in costume and camp if you can!
- Riding the Rails - we scheduled the ride on the "Pumpkin Patch Express" only to find out the grandkids couldn't make it - but we went anyway and told them all about it.
- Take Me Out To The Ball Game - our oldest grandson (4) loves baseball (actually he loves any game with a ball) so we rented the picnic area at Dell Diamond for his birthday - he and all his friends had a blast - as did the parents and grandparents. You should consider something like this for your childs next birthday - it's inexpensive and everybody will love it.
Commentary and Plea for Help - At times it got a little crowded traveling and camping with 6 adults, my brother, two dogs, 6 cases of beer, 7 bikes plus two kids trailers, 3 car seats in the prime sitting positions, and 3 grandkids all jam packed into our 40' foot motorhome! So if you have a reasonably priced motor home or trailer with bunk beds that sleeps 9 for sale, let me know - the sooner the better since we have a new grandson with diapers, a crib, another car seat, two strollers (one for the back trails and one for city use), plus all sorts of formula, medicine, and other baby goodies. I'm not so sure the the motorhome can handle the load! If you blow by us doing 40 on the freeway, honk and wave! |

After all those fun weekends and trips with the grandkids and their fun loving parents, we were ready for a vacation. Normally, you think of a vacation as a time to get away, chill at the pool, and come home rested and relaxed - it turns out that relaxing and naps never seem to get on our vacation agenda! We have to cram as many events as we possible can into the daylight hours and then look for some lively nighttime activities. Bottom line - we arrive home sore, sun burned, quite a few pounds heavier, and pooped - badly needing some sleep and down time. Here were just some of the fun vacations we enjoyed in 2009:
- Aspen & Snowmass - we stuffed the motorhome to the brim with our daughters, their three kids, car seats, bikes, bike trailers, strollers, plenty of beer, games, DVDs, and lots more stuff and then headed off for a 21 hour drive to visit relatives in Minnesota and then to spend time in Aspen & Snowmass hiking, biking, jumping off a mountain, golfing, and exploring Aspen - wow, what a trip!
- Panama City Beach - to escape the cold weather, we ended 2008 and kicked off 2009 by spending nine days in Panama City Beach golfing, biking, boating, playing on the beach, dancing, eating and drinking, and enjoying everything this fantastic town has to offer! If you like white sandy beaches, great golf, and lots of things to see and do, you need to head to PCB.
- Scottsdale Golfing Vacation - we knew that Scottsdale is a golfers meca, so how could we pass up staying for free in my brother's timeshare for a week! We played 154 holes of golf, visited the mining town of Jerome, stayed in a magnificent resort and took a fun off road jeep tour in Sedona, flew over the desert in a hot air balloon, and kayaked down the Salt River.

We had some great camping trips and discovered some new RV parks in 2009 that we really enjoyed, some of which included:
- Lakeside RV Resort & Marina - Lake Livingston - great sites with full hookups on the water, good beach, swimming pool, and a restaurant and bar!
- Rustic Creek Ranch - Ft Worth - a great place to park the rig and explore the area and their cabins and pool are fantastic.
- Lakeview RV Resort - Houston - if you want to camp and explore Houston, this is the best in the area - outstanding sites, beautiful pool and rec room, cabins, good service, and close to lots to see and do.
A number of RV parks now have cabins/cottages which are an excellent alternative to staying in a hotel or for putting up friends that you don't have room for in your rig or for spending the night at if you don't feel like driving your RV. They are comfortable, have full kitchens, are typically cheaper and larger than a hotel room, will sleep 4 to 6 people, and you can enjoy the RV park amenities - check out this new Cottages & Cabins page to find a cabin to enjoy. |

Each year we say that these four favorite music festivals can't get any better or more fun, yet they do! If you like Texas country music, folk music, camping, good times, and fun loving crowds, then you'll enjoy:
If you want to escape from Texas and like Woody Guthrie music then the Woody Guthrie's Annual Folk Festival in Okemah, Oklahoma is a must. If you haven't seen the Tejas Brothers, go out of your way to catch them. You'll find all of this plus upcoming events and more on our Music and Events page. |
- Lake Maps - we use these interactive maps to help us find what to do on some of the Texas Lakes - like where are the ramps, party coves, restaurants and bars, lodging (resorts, campgrounds, cabins), nearby golf, and lots more
- Favorite Lakes - we added some new lake reviews and Lake Conroe made it on the list because it has good coves, several choices for camping or lodging, excellent golf courses, good cruising, and lots of waterfront restaurants and bars
- Lake Cabins & Lodges - we found some nice cabins on the water, so we created a Lake Cabins page
After playing around in a Kayak and learning about all the kayak trails, kayak fishing, and kayak racing, we added a new Kayaking page. We also expanded our Boat Rentals Page if you want to rent a boat, party barge, or jet ski and enjoy the lakes.
Our (opps, my) passion for sailing (and wishing I was still racing Hobie Cats) hasn't gone away, so we (opps again, I) expanded our Sailing page. I say "I" because my former racing partner (and wife) has refused to sail with me or let me consider buying a sailboat after I accidently dumped her (she fell off but claims I dumped her) in the middle of California's Monterey Bay as we were racing in 35 mile per hour gusts with 15 foot swells to the first marker. |
In 2009 we spent a lot of money on gas for the boat, Jeep, motorhome, and SUV as were exploring Texas and founding new fun things to see and do. Most have been added to Texas Outside's Discover Texas Section. Some of the highlights in 2009 were:
- Corpus Christi - after spending some more time here, Corpus rose to the top of the list of our favorite Texas cities because it offers lots of things to see and do - read our Top Ten Fun Things To Do in Corpus.
- Great Wolf Lodge - it was cold, we were bored, and the grandkids had been good, so we decided to spend the weekend at Great Wolf Lodge - well worth the money!
- Flying L Guest Ranch - we were looking for another excuse to visit one of our favorite Texas towns, Bandera the "Cowboy Capital of Texas" with 23 churches and 16 bars - the locals are either partying or praying. So when we found an excuse to get near Bandera, we jumped right on it and stayed at Flying L Guest Ranch. Not a genuine dude ranch but close to it with good accommodations, fun golf course, waterpark, horse back riding, hay rides, and lots more - a great place for a family weekend or longer.

We found lots of other fun things to see and do in Texas and have significantly expanded our Fun Stuff page. Some of what we found and enjoyed or added to our "to do list" include:
- Airborne Activities - since jumping off Aspen mountain in a paraglider and taking a helicopter ride over the crowd at Larry Joe Taylor's music festival, I got excited about enjoying other airborne activities and have added some of them on this page to our bucket list. The wife just updated and increased my insurance policy!
- Zip Lines & Challenge Courses - if you and the kids haven't tried a zip line or if you adventerous and brave jocks haven't tried a challenge course, then add it to your list for 2010.
- Off Road Parks - for you four wheelers, ATVers, or dirt bike fans, here is a list of some places where you can ride the bumps, get muddy or dusty, and have a blast off road.

| What's New! |
Look for "What's New" on Texas Outside to quickly find all the new pages and updates for that month.
Texas Outside has over 9000 pages of content on Texas and we are adding several new pages each month. And we keep discovering pages that we didn't even know existed on Texas Outside that we update and enhance as we trip across them or when visitors let us know about them - usually to tell us that the page is out of date - a major challenge for us!
To help you discover new and exciting things to see and do, we have added a What's New Page. This page will highlight all of the new or updated content for that month. It's a great way to find new and exciting adventures and things to see and do. |
