Principle 2 - Worship Ten Principles of a Growing Christian Pastor Bob Russell says that every growing, healthy, New Testament Church will be identified by at least ten ever-present principles. One would conclude then that those same ten principles will be found in every growing, spiritually healthy Christian. This week we're going to look at the principle of worship.
William Temple defined worship as, "...the submission of all our nature to God." When God Builds A Church, page 39. Too many times, modern Christianity has relegated worship as the twenty to thirty minutes spent in singing before the sermon is given. While this is an important time and worship should be done in this way, this definition is much to narrow . As we drill down into this principle this week, I'm praying that you will receive the teaching, put it into practice, and most of all - worship! May God bless you on our journey this week.
Read Psalm 100 at least two or three times and reflect on it in your quiet time today. Also, think about how you will live a life of worship as you love God and love others. Let's try something new today. Take a pencil and pad, or take a spiral bound note book, start a daily journal, and jot down some notes from your study. Let me get you started and then you take it from there.
Verse 1 says we are to,
Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth!
Psalms 100:1 (ESV)
Shout with joy to the LORD, all the earth! Psalm 100:1 (NLT)
Ask this of each verse and write it down: What action word is given and what are we to do? For example in verse 1, "Make" or "Shout" - make what? "a joyful noise", or "with joy" etc. Do this for each verse as it applies.
Then ask yourself the following questions, reflect on them, and then write them in your journal:
1. What do we know or realize or acknowledge about God?
2. What do we discover about who we are in verse 3?
3. What other reasons do we find for worshiping God in verse 5?
How has God been good to you? Why not write your own Psalm of Praise to God! Just reflect on God, His love and goodness, His forgiveness and mercy, His peace and pardon, then write a few words, phrases, or maybe an entire Psalm! If you'd like, share it with me. I'd love to read your words of worship today. Here's a worship psalm I wrote years ago that Marylin and I put to music to use as a call to worship:
We have come, O Lord, to worship thee. We have come, O Lord, to worship thee. Heavenly Father, Redeemer, and Guide, We have come, O Lord, to worship thee.
