Truth - Day 3 Disco Lessons Part 1
When many of us hear the word "disco" we think of the dance genre craze of the mid to late 70's. But for our study, disco takes on a new meaning. According to The Holman Bible Dictionary, "Discipline comes from a Latin word "disco" which means to learn or get to know, a direct kind of acquaintance with something or someone. Discipline refers to the process by which one learns a way of life." The truth is, if I could use a bit of license, to be disciplined is to learn to dance with God. Not through some harsh punishment but joining Him on the dance floor of life and learning through "disco" to follow His lead. Solomon, in the Book of Wisdom described it this way:
My child, don't reject the LORD's discipline, and don't be upset when he corrects you. For the LORD corrects those he loves, just as a father corrects a child in whom he delights. Proverbs 3:11-12 (NLT)
So maybe it would be fair to ask, who are you dancing with? Or, who or what is taking the lead in your life? What way of life are you learning? Today's passage of study is from Hebrews and in it, God is teaching us how to live a disciplined life. As you read it and study it, I encourage you to be still for a few minutes and let God speak to you, dance with you, and teach you from it. May God bless your time with Him.
Study it: Hebrews 12:1-13
When you were a child, how were you disciplined? (This may bring back good or "not-so-good" thoughts to mind) Have you ever had to be "disciplined" to get through something that was hard to do like preparing for a race or some other event?
Live it:
1. What two things are we called to do as we run the "race set before us?" (12:1)
2. What discipline was required of Jesus as He paid for the sins of the world? (12:2)
3. How should we respond when we endure hostility from others? (12:3)
Think about it:
How do you respond when someone else mistreats you?
Would you allow Christ to take the lead in the dance of discipline in your life today? If you will, the disco will be sweet!
