| Cure for MS? Not yet in the U.S. but other countries have approved the procedure |

Support groups for MS sufferers are buzzing with the news that a simple operation could free patients from a lifelong affliction. Italian Dr. Paolo Zamboni, whose wife has/had MS, found a number of century-old sources citing excess iron as a possible cause of MS. He then made a staggering discovery. More than 90% of people with MS have some sort of malformation or blockage in the veins that drain blood (and excess iron) from the brain. After performing a relatively simple procedure to unblock the veins in her neck, his wife has been symptom free for three years. He followed up with 65 procedures on other MS patients. A full 73% of those patients are symptom free two years after the procedure.

| Russian Paralympian prowess is making waves back home |
 |
|
The headlines in the New York Times on May 20,2010 was pretty amazing: Disabled Athletes Defy an Unaccommodating City. The story was about a group of Russian Paralympic athletes who returned from the winter Paralympics in Canada with a huge win in the medal count -- far more than their Russian Olympic counterparts. What made the story so unique was the fact that disabled athletes were even being compared to non-disabled athletes and that the Russian Paralympians were being hailed as the better athletes in their native country.
In fact, the Russian Olympic team won a meager three gold medals while the following month the Russian Paralympic team won a staggering 38 medals, including 12 golds. Not bad for a group of athletes who constantly battle physical, social and attitudinal barriers.Their enormous success will hopefully bring greater visibility to their disability movement.

| The top 10 BENEFITS of being in a wheelchair: One man's answer to the Top 10 Annoyances |
 |
When the Christopher and Dana Reed Foundation asked people what the top 10 ten annoyances are to people who use wheelchairs, strongly positive Chris Daubitz (C-6/C-7 quad) had to respond with the positives...and here they are:
1. My wife and I always have a seat...no matter where we go.
2. My wife sitting on my lap, hugging me, is extremely romantic.
3. I love how kids look and stare at me. Everything kids see is new to them. I talk to them, show them a wheelie, and by doing this, they don't grow up thinking that my wheelchair is a disability, it is just different.
4. Being the first to board an airplane, cruise ship, amusement parks, etc.
5. It is a conversation starter.
6. Always have a place to put my drink.
7. Standing out in a crowd--in my single days, I dated more after I was injured than before.
8. My shoes last for years.
9. Eye height-you guys understand this one:)
10. I get exercise without having to spend hours in the gym.
Chris believes that everyone is treated how they project themselves onto others. He chooses to "live with optimism and positivity." Says Chris "we only get one chance to live, so LIVE IT UP!!!"

Ads May Make a Difference in Disability Employment in 40 States!
Check out the Plans and the Jobs!
You might have seen the ads, a woman in a wheelchair rolls through the office talking about the "disabilities" of the other employees in the office. They are largely silly things. But the point is the disabilities don't affect how well that person can do his job. In these advertisements, "Think Beyond the Label" is promoting the employment of those who are disabled through a partnership of health and human service and employment agencies with federal grants which have come together to build a uniform national infrastructure and approach that connects businesses to qualified candidates with disabilities. Its goal is simple: to raise awareness that hiring people with disabilities makes good business sense. Says the web site, "Employees with disabilities have unique, competitively relevant knowledge and perspectives about work processes, bringing different perspectives to meeting work requirements and goals successfully. Hiring someone who 'thinks outside the box' might be thinking too small when there's an opportunity to hire someone who lives outside the box."
Health & Disability Advocates (HDA), is a national nonprofit organization that promotes income security and improved health care access for children, people with disabilities, and low-income older adults. HDA is spearheading the Think Beyond the Label campaign on behalf of more than 40 states and various national and regional organizations by serving as its fiscal agent. For more information about HDA or the collaborative, please email us.
And yes, their web site is Section 508-compliant, and is accessible to people with disabilities.
