Greetings!
Just when you thought the politics were over
we bring you a letter from some top
disability-advocate organizations pushing the
Obama Administration to make good on their
promise of an "inclusive" executive
government. Check out the letter here and use
it to craft your own so we get the
representation we really need! Also, Check out
Ricky James, an elite athlete and great role
model. Plus read about Rep. Jim Langevin and
his hopes for stem cell research. And,
finally, check out the experiments on muscle
regeneration... Amazing! Read on,
and as always, if you have a
need or a question, we are
here for you!
| Wheelchair toting Congressman, Langevin has new hope for stem cell research |
 |
|
Because of the spinal cord injury he suffered
in an accidental shooting in 1980, U.S. Rep.
James R. Langevin not only uses a wheelchair,
he also has the equivalent of a broken
thermostat for controlling his body
temperature. But Langevin said, "As much as I
hate the cold weather, I wouldn't have missed
this inauguration." The Democratic
congressman has been a champion of human
embryonic stem cell research and with Obama
sponsored the Stem Cell Research Enhancement
Act of 2007. There has been debate about
whether Obama should quickly issue an
executive order regarding stem cell research
or whether Congress should plow through a
divisive debate to enact a statute. "My
preference is we do both," Langevin said.
Langevin hopes such research could eventually
help him. But, he said, "This isn't about Jim
Langevin. It's about the millions of others
who can be helped."

Ricky was well on his way to fulfilling a
childhood dream of becoming a Supercross
champion, when life took a drastic turn. At
just 16 years old, the handsome teenager was
injured in a Motocross accident. The blow to
his T7 vertebrae left him paralyzed from his
sternum down. Today he can usually be found
racing a specially engineered Motocross bike
or behind the wheel of a Nascar-style truck,
but a few weeks ago he also won the
Hand-Cycle Class Championship in the Foster
Grant Ironman World Championship 70.3
Triathlon by swimming for 2.4 miles,
handcycling for 112 miles, and running a 26.2
mile marathon. "This has been an opportunity
to show young people that suffer from any
form of disability that, with perseverance,
anything is achievable", said James. We say,
"Wow!"

| Amazing! Brain signals revive paralyzed muscles in monkeys |
 |
|
Monkeys taught to play a computer game were
able to overcome wrist paralysis with an
experimental device that might lead to new
treatments for patients with stroke and
spinal cord injury. Remarkably, the monkeys
regained use of paralyzed muscles by learning
to control the activity of just a single
brain cell. The device monitored the activity
of a brain cell and used that as a cue to
stimulate wrist muscles electrically.
Researchers found it could even use brain
cells that normally had nothing to do with
wrist movement, said study co-author Chet
Moritz. So a large untapped pool of brain
cells may be available for letting paralyzed
people do things like grasping a coffee cup
or brushing teeth, Moritz said. But he
stressed the approach is years, if not
decades, away from use in people. It is just
a crack in the door, but what a door!

Now's the time to pressure the new administration for jobs |
|
|

Action Alert!
A group of national consumer-controlled
disability
organizations have sent a letter to key
players in the
Obama
administration to pressure them into living
up to their
promises to the disabled community. It is
time to turn
on the HEAT!
We want JOBS for people with disabilities
in the
new administration!
We want a domestic policy adviser IN THE
WHITE
HOUSE who is knowledgeable about and
experienced in disability issues!
We want our voices heard and our opinions
valued as appointments and decisions are made
that
will affect our lives!
Contact the members of the transition
team and
let them know that you expect the disability
community's input to be respected
in the new administration. Write your own
letter or use
the one below!

To the Obama administration:
We are writing on behalf of the more than 50
million Americans with disabilities to urge
you to carry
out the commitment
President Obama made to the disability
community during the campaign. Specifically,
the
undersigned grassroots consumer
controlled organizations are writing to urge
you to
include a qualified person with a disability,
who is an
expert in disability
policy, to serve on the Domestic Policy
Council (DPC).
As a collective of organizations, we
represent the full
spectrum of
disabilities.
We are concerned that there has been little
outreach to disability-run organizations in the
selection process for President Obama's Cabinet and
political
appointees and
we are concerned that the appointments to
date do
not reflect a concerted
effort to include qualified individuals with
disabilities to
serve in senior positions in the new
Administration.
Familiarity and
experience with disability issues and the
disability
community is critical to implementing the
inclusive
vision for America that
President Obama campaigned on
Thank you for your leadership. We look
forward to
working together to achieve these goals.

not hesitate to contact
