Season's Greetings from Councilmember Valerie Ervin

Greetings!

The holidays are a time for self-reflection and for taking time to appreciate friends and family.  One of the things that I am most grateful for this holiday season is the honor to serve the communities of Kensington, Silver Spring, Takoma Park, and Wheaton.  I appreciate your continued advocacy.  Your calls and emails help enhance our community's quality of life.  I appreciate all of your efforts.

Throughout the past two years, we have accomplished much; however, with the economic downturn, I know that many residents are struggling.  As we move forward together into 2009, many challenges await us.  I want to assure you that my colleagues on the Council and I are up to the challenge.  While we will have to make many tough decisions to balance the budget, we will take all steps necessary to preserve important County priorities such as education, public safety, and programs that provide assistance for working families and those who are most in need.

I hope you enjoy the holidays with your friends and family. I look forward to the New Year and know that by working together we will continue to make Montgomery County an even better place to call home.

Sincerely,

Buy Local Silver Spring Guide released at Jackie's Restaurant!

Val speaks at Local First Silver SpringOn December 10, Councilmember Ervin and the Latino Economic Development Corporation (LEDC) launched Local First Silver Spring with the Buy Local Silver Spring GuideLocal First Silver Spring joins Local First Wheaton as an ongoing effort to highlight the importance of small independent businesses throughout District 5.  The Buy Local Guide is a product of the Councilmember's meetings with local business owners and illustrates the economic benefits of purchasing from local businesses.  For example, for every $10 spent at a locally owned business, nearly 2/3 is circulated within local community.  The Guide lists approximatley 200 small businesses located within the Silver Spring Central Business District, their location, and the type of services offered.  A special thanks goes to community members Karen Roper, Marcie Stickle, George French, and Jane Gorbaty, who volunteered their time to help make the Guide possible.
