BALTIMORE, MD, May 12, 2008-Montgomery County Councilmember Valerie Ervin was honored as one of "Maryland's Top 100 Women for 2008," a program sponsored by the Baltimore-based Daily Record newspaper that recognizes women throughout the state "for outstanding achievement in professional accomplishment, community leadership and mentoring."
Councilmember Ervin, in her first term representing Montgomery County's District 5 (that includes Takoma Park, Wheaton, Kensington and parts of Silver Spring), was among the honorees on Monday, May 12, at the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall in Baltimore.
The Maryland's Top 100 Women program, which was started in 1996, is a distinguished list that includes elected officials, judges, educational leaders, members of the health community, social difference-makers and government representatives.
Councilmember Ervin, a former member of the Montgomery County Board of Education, has focused on improving the lives of children throughout her public service. In November, she was profiled among 11 "Wonder Women" who are making a difference in their communities in a special feature of the
November-December issue of Bethesda Magazine.
Councilmember Ervin, chairs the County Council's Education committee and serves on the Management and Fiscal Policy committee, said she was honored to be recognized with such an impressive group of women.
"This year's class of Maryland's Top 100 Women is an incredible list of people who help make this state great," said Councilmember Ervin, who was elected to the County Council in November of 2006. "The common thread among this diverse group of women is that each has spent a great deal of time making a difference for others. It is an honor to be included with them."
