Montgomery County Councilmember Valerie Ervin was named one of "Marylands's Top 100 Women for 2008," a program sponsored by the Baltimore-based Daily Record newspaper that recognizes women throughout the state "for outstanding achievement in professional accomplishment, community leadership and mentoring."

Councilmember Ervin, in her first term, represents Montgomery County's District 5 (that includes Takoma Park, Wheaton, Kensington, and parts of Silver Spring).

Maryland's Top 100 Women program was started in 1996.  The 2008 list includes elected officials, judges, educational leaders, members of the health community, social difference-makers and government representatives.

Councilmember Ervin, a former member of the Montgomery County Board of Education, has focused on improving the lives of children throughout her public service.  In November, she was profiled among 11 "Wonder Women" who are making a difference in their communities in a special feature of the November-December issue of Bethesda Magazine.

Councilmember Ervin, who serves on the County Council's Education and Transportation and Environment Committees, said she is honored to be included with such an impressive group of women.

"This year's class of Maryland's Top 100 Women is an incredible list of people who help make this State great," said Councilmember Ervin.  "The common thread among this diverse group of women is that each has spent a great deal of time making a difference for others.  It is an honor to be included with them."
