  • SMAI welcomes Master Yu and Tony Ortiz

In addition to capoeira, karate, and yoga, we now offer tai chi with Master Yu Chen-hsiang and Eskrima (Filipino sword fighting) with Tony Ortiz.

We are honored to welcome Master Yu, who teaches Yang-style tai chi 10:15 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Friday.

    Tony Ortiz teaches 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Monday.

Sensei Michelle’s final round in Iaido Nationals
    Michelle Bio

    By Sensei Michelle Gay

I flew to Cincinnati to participate in my first AUSKF National Iaido Camp, which included Seminar, Taikai (tournament) and Shinsa (testing). After two days of instruction and practice under the tutelage of the top Senseis in America, I took a stab at testing and competition. In the evening, I bonded with my sword mates over dinner and drinks. Very civilized.

A martial arts dummy for five years, I decided to stop dragging my feet and make the transition from white belt to blue.

    Society Year-in-Review

With your support, we have had a successful year in our new location. This past summer, we installed two shower facilities, participated in World Kanreikei's summer camp (Diane Banks, Sensei Michelle, and Julia Aramov pictured above at camp), and remodeled our dressing rooms. Most recently, we conducted promotion tests in September and Dec. 10.

We predict another successful year starting with Jan. 7 World Kanreikei New Year's Training at the Connecticut Headquarters. (Please sign the chart by the water cooler if you are interested. We will drive very early in the morning.) Next, mark your calendars for SMAI's Jan. 20 through 21 Martial Arts Movement Symposium featuring ground fighting, Philipino stick fighting, boxing, Kanreikai Karate, contact improv, aikido, bagua, and Karate Kicks Asana workshop.

In the meantime, you may participate in our Donations MAT-ter Winter Fundraiser. We need $2,500 to buy more portable mats. Our goal is to cover the entire dojo floor for safer training options. You may donate at our front desk or on-line. See below for details.

    Upcoming Events

  • Kanreikei New Year's Training-Jan. 7 at 9 a.m. at the World Kanreikei Connecticut headquarters
  • SMAI's Martial Arts Movement Symposium-Jan. 20- 21
  • We thank our warriors:

Thank you to our Dec. 17 Kanreikei Dojo Cleaners: Rondell Romiel, Diane Bank, Donna Green, Sensei Maria, Chris Ridge, Randy Torres, Scott Lyons, Cathryn Barmon, Lynn Barry, Max Sternberg, Zelda Gay, Dot Weldon, Saari Koponen-Robtham, Ann Votaw, Sensei Michelle, Bob Gay, Laura Belsey, and Mark Deutsch. After cleaning the mats, shrine, windows, mirrors, office, and showers, we toasted the new year with sake!

Finally, we have a few schedule changes. Capoeira Nago is leaving SMAI, but we wish them all the best in their new home at Renzo Gracie's Ju Jitsu Academy. Changes in Kanreikei New York scheduling include no more 6 p.m. Tuesday fighting class with Shijan Jose or 12:30 p.m. Wednesday karate class with Sensei Michelle. Meanwhile, we have added a 1 to 2 p.m. Friday fighting class with Sensei Michelle.
