February 2008

Linda ShevloffWelcome to our February newsletter!

The Lunar New Year is fast approaching.  I would like to take the opportunity to wish everyone prosperity, happiness and good health in the upcoming Year of the Rat.

Someone once told me  a cold lunar new year is considered lucky. In that case, the year should be a very good one.

I hope you have  time to enjoy being with family and friends and can take a break from the usually hectic pace of life in the city. I know most of you will be away from your regular activities for a while.

If you are in Hong Kong over the festive period and would like to do some yoga, I will be leading a three-day workshop on the afternoons of the 8, 9 and 10th of February.  Details are below.

Guruji BKS Iyengar

Guruji BKS Iyengar

Mr. Iyengar talks about a passage from the Yoga Sutras where we are given methods to deal with mental disturbances and find the key to happiness:

"In order to achieve a serene consciousness, we have to be willing to change our behavior and approach toward the external world. This is for our own good. Certain treatments cultivate the mind and smooth the yogic path. They are:

Maitri - cultivation of friendliness towards those who are happy
Karuna - cultivation of compassion toward those in sorrow
Mudita - cultivation of joy towards those who are virtuous
Upeksa - cultivation of indifference or neutrality towards those who are full of vices

As we begin to withdraw our ego and the attachment to our feelings that disturb us, as we use the healing qualities to calm our hearts and minds, we also begin to withdraw from the vicissitudes of life. This withdrawal is called pratyahara. It is an important part of experiencing inner peace."

Bilingual teachers
Happy Chinese New Year! Our new Beginners Yoga Series will be taught by Lydia Tsang and Kitty Leung. Both in their second year of teacher training, they are ready to begin some basic teaching.

It will be the first time we have teachers who are bilingual in English and Cantonese. Sometimes students who aren't comfortable speaking English are reluctant to take classes at our studio because English is the language of instruction.

While Lydia and Kitty's classes will also be taught in English, they will translate for those who cannot understand.

This four week series will run Mondays from February 18 to March 10
The cost is $500
