Welcome to July's newsletter!
One of the local Chinese newspapers, Oriental Daily, recently published a feature article about injuries many people have experienced through yoga.
Yoga has had a rapid rise in popularity in Hong Kong, studios and teachers are mushrooming all over the city. Many teachers do not have proper training or understanding of the subject, and are teaching without knowledge.
One reason we are a small school is the time - the years - it takes to train teachers properly. There is nothing flashy about this yoga. It is sane, healthy and safe.
If I could write Cantonese, I would tell the newspaper that problems coming up in some yoga centers do not apply to all.
In our classes, students are taught the basics first. Their learning is regulated so they do not jump to poses beyond their capacity to perform. Iyengar yoga is known worldwide for its rigorous training, its attention to alignment, health and safety. In fact, it is often prescribed by doctors to patients who have structural problems.
I encourage you to write a letter to the editor of Oriental Daily to clarify some of these points. It is difficult to keep a small independent high quality yoga studio running in this city. So many people are attracted by glitz.

Anatomy & Yoga: Holy Sacrum - there's that tailbone! |
|
The "Holy Sacrum! Where's that Tailbone " workshop with Angela Tam and Linda Shevloff was a lot of fun. If interest is expressed in another anatomy workshop, we will be happy to present a second session.
Angela has agreed to field anatomy questions from students. Send your e-mail to info@iyengaryogahongkong.com - make the subject line: "Anatomy Questions for Angela."
Angela has sent the proceeds of the June 17 workshop to The Hong Kong Federation of Women's Centres, which provides a wide range of services for disadvantaged women.
