Retail Sites Closing - and Opening - in a Challenging Economy
The need for high-performing locations
Linens 'N Things is closing 120 stores and filing for bankruptcy. Many other retailers including Home Depot and Disney are shutting the doors on under-performing store locations in this challenging economy.
On the other hand, JCPenny has plans to open 36 new stores this year. Kohl's plans to open 70 new stores. Borders is opening new stores. So is L.L.Bean.
How can a retailer protect itself from the ups and downs of the economy and choose strong performing locations in any market conditions?

Many U.S. retailers are expanding internationally to fuel growth. China is a particularly hot market. Best Buy and Dell have recently increased their presence there, and with the Olympics coming to Beijing this summer, more retailers are likely to follow.
