Your Tritype reveals your Life Mission and Blind Spot
enhancing Personal Growth and Transformation.
Recorded live at the International Enneagram Association Conference in Las Vegas in August of 2009, this lecture masterfully guides the audience on a deep and compelling journey toward greater self-discovery. Listen along as David and Katherine present their latest research findings on Tritype.
Aristotle suggested that true internal harmony could only be achieved when each aspect of the psyche is performing what it was primitively meant to perform, enabling one to develop the internal conditions necessary to achieve true happiness. One's Enneagram Tritype identifies key aspects of one's psyche which when understood, can illuminate the path to greater self-awareness and a more fulfilling life.
What is the Enneagram 'Tritype'?
The Enneagram is a personality typology that identifies 9 distinct ways in which individuals organize, perceive and defend their realities. Each Enneagram Type describes a particular defense strategy and internal motivation.
Tritype identifies the specific use of three Enneagram Types creating a map of human behavior that is a dynamic tool for self-discovery. Based on years of research, Tritype reveals that we each have three Enneagram Types that we use in a consistent order. These three Enneagram Types occur one in each of the three centers of intelligence: head, heart and gut. One of these types is the dominant Enneagram Type and represents the ego’s preferred defense strategy, however, when the strategy of the dominant Enneagram Type fails, the ego then uses the strategies of the other two types.
The defense strategies of the three types within the Tritype collude, creating a unique focus of attention and a shared worldview. Research suggests that the common theme found among the three types within one's Tritype identifies a critical blind spot that is at root of unconscious suffering.
In addition, one’s Tritype gives important clues as to what is needed to live a more conscious and meaningful life. The high side of the intersection of these three Enneagram Types is that it gives life direction, focus and purpose. The low side is that it narrows the ability to self assess, keeping one asleep to one’s true nature.
Examples
A Tritype configuration of 874 indicates someone with Type 8, the solution master, as the primary type with additional strategies of the type 7 and 4. This person would be strong and direct (8), positive and innovative (7) and seek unique and meaningful (4) solutions. If the strategy of Type 8, to over come obstacles, fails, this individual’s ego would then deploy the strategy of Type 7, to lighten up and examine other potential options. If the problem remains unresolved, the ego would then deploy the strategy of Type 4, focusing on meaning, becoming more analytical to handle the problem. This cascade of emotions ensues until the ego is satisfied.
Tritype also helps to explain why people of the same Enneagram Type may appear to be different from others of the same Enneagram Type. As an example, the 874 is the ‘free spirit’ 8 that must be protective, autonomous, innovative and creative to feel satisfaction whereas the 826 is the ‘rescuer’ 8 that focuses on being protective, helpful, loyal and dutiful to feel satisfaction.
Origins of Tritype
Katherine's work with Tritype was initially inspired by her Enneastyle and Instinctual Subtypes research. Over the years, she noticed during 'deep inquiry' coaching sessions that clients consistently organized their life strategies around not one, but three Enneagram Types.
Circa 1996, Katherine learned from a member of Arica, that Enneagram pioneer, Oscar Ichazo, had added the term tri-fix: the use of three Enneagram fixations. This concept validated her findings and complimented her ongoing research. This lead to the development of an online testing instrument designed by David and Katherine to help individuals identify their dominant types within each center of intelligence.
To date, over 10,000 people have taken the Tritype Test with this online test. As a result, this study has yielded an original body of work. Therefore, out of respect and in an effort to avoid confusion, Katherine and David coined the term 'Tritype' to distinguish their research findings from Ichazo's teachings.
