NWPC Endorses Suzan DelBene for Congress WA-08
Suzan DelBeneThe NWPC recently endorsed Suzan DelBene for Congress.  Suzan is challenging incumbent Dave Reichert in the 8th Congressional District.

A technology executive and software entrepreneur for over 20 years, she will bring small-business accountability to Washington. DelBene is a consultant to public and private sector companies and most recently worked as a strategic advisor to Global Partnerships, a non-profit focused on supporting micro-finance and sustainable solutions that serve those in poverty in Latin America. She has been a long time volunteer with our local YWCA helping women and families who are struggling with transitional housing, child care, job services and clothing.

This contest has been called a toss-up; however, DelBene is quickly defining herself as a hardworking, polished, and well-informed candidate who is in it to win it! Her fundraising has consistently reached campaign targets and earned her respect from the political pundits.

Confidence in her campaign can be demonstrated by endorsements from Washington State's top elected officials including Governor Gregoire, Democratic Members of Congress, and a host of state and county elected officials.

Smart Women Salon Series: A Guide to Political Leadership
The Caucus hosted our 2nd Smart Women Salon last week with award-winning broadcast media veteran (and frequent Caucus trainer) Lorraine Howell, founder/owner of Media Skills Training.  About 40 members and friends mingled, enjoyed appetizers and drinks, and then heard Lorraine share from her book Give Your Elevator Speech A Lift: How To Craft Your Own Commercial.

Lorraine's Top 10 Tips is now posted on the website, along with tips from Sabra Schneider's Social Media presentation from the October Salon.

Future Salons are in the planning stages but will include topics like Serving on Boards & Commissions, Mentoring for Women, Negotiating Skills For Women, Life Work Balance, Fundraising, and many more!

From The President
Thanks to all who attended our Annual Meeting on January 24th!

It was a great meeting, our keynote speakers were Representatives Lynn Kessler, House Majority Leader and Representative Dawn Morrell, House Majority Caucus Chair.

A bylaws change passed by the membership allows for the creation of Local Endorsement Action Committees (LEACs) in counties where there are not sufficient resources for a local Caucus chapter.  The LEACs will take on the endorsement process (research, interviews, support) and will operate as a subcommittee of the state endorsement committee - providing expertise on local issues and a connection to candidates.

King County Chapter Chair, Kelsey Beck, announced that in the absence of leadership to run a local chapter, the King County Chapter would operate as a LEAC in 2010 and focus on recruiting, endorsing, and supporting our women candidates.  Melissa Gilbert and Anne Grant-Anderson will co-chair that LEAC and would love to hear from you if you are interested in helping with 2010 endorsements!

If you are interested in participating in the endorsement process in your county please contact State Endorsement Chairs Jennifer Hill and Annie Johnson at info@wpcnet.org.

Also at the annual meeting we re-elected Endorsement Co-Chairs Jennifer Hill and Annie Johnson; said thank you to outgoing officers Mary Fox, long time state Caucus treasurer; Ronda Larson, state Caucus VP Republican; and Kelsey Beck, King County Chair - who has recently been elected as our Washington State NWPC Board representative.  We also honored Karen Heidergott, Karen Place, Linda Ortmeyer, and Marilyn Gerde-Schultz for their long-time service on the King County chapter endorsement committee.

Caucus members held a strategy meeting earlier in February where we began planning for 2010.  We are all excited and energized by the discussion, ideas, and passion for encouraging and training women to run for office!

Our monthly business meetings held the first Sunday of the month from 10am - 12pm are open to all.  Please let me know if you'd like to attend and/or get more involved!

Linda Mitchell
