Race Postponement Notice

Friday, April 8, 2011

Dear Participants:

As you know by now, the Federal government shut down tonight at midnight, April 8.

A few moments ago, the National Park Service formally rescinded our permit for the Parkway Classic on April 10 in accordance with the Department of Interior interim guidance to cancel or postpone all special events during a federal government shut down. Therefore, there will be no race on Sunday.

Following is our detailed contingency plan regarding the Parkway Classic.

As disclosed on March 31, we were granted a "rain" date of Sunday, May 1, 2011 at 8:00am for the running of the Parkway Classic 10 Mile and 5K in its entirety. We hope you will be able to join us on May 1 for the 27th running of the George Washington Parkway Classic.

If you plan on joining us on May 1, simply use the items you obtained or will pick up at packet pick up.  This includes your bib and bib-timing chip.

If you have already picked up your packet and are planning on joining us May 1, there is nothing you need to do other than show up for the race.

If you have not picked up your packet but plan on joining us May 1, you may retrieve your items at our regularly scheduled packet pick up on Saturday, April 9 10am-6pm at Pacers Alexandria or on Saturday, April 30, 10am-6pm, at the same location.

If you are unable to join us May 1, for any reason, we are offering full deferments to the 2012 Parkway Classic slated for April 22, 2012.  If you have questions or extenuating circumstances, please do not hesitate to contact us at parkwayclassic@gmail.com.

To request a deferment to 2012, please fill out our online deferment form by midnight, April 17.  The form can be accessed here.

If you have already picked up your packet and would like to defer to 2012, we ask that you simply return your bib number and t-shirt to the closest Pacers Running Store on or before April 17 so we can process your deferment.  If you would prefer to drop your items in the mail, please send them to:

Pacers Running Stores

3100 Clarendon Boulevard

Arlington, VA 22201

In light of anticipated attrition for the May 1 race, we are re-opening registration for the Parkway Classic. We will keep registration open until April 22 or until we have reached capacity, whatever comes first. Please inform your family and friends who are interested in running this event.

If you have any questions, please  e-mail us at events@runpacers.com. We have engaged additional staff to manage this transition and to ensure your questions are answers in a timely manner.

In closing, I would like to thank the following agencies, offices, and individuals for their hard work and support: the Office of Senator Mark Warner, the Office of Representative James Moran, the City of Alexandria, especially Rob Krupicka, Paul Smedberg, Jack Broward, Jim Neuhor, and Sgt. Joe Seskey, the United States Park Police, National Park Service, Virginia Department of Transportation, BAE Systems, especially Heather Hescheles, Ben Klein, Podesta + Partners, Justin Wilson, Bill Reifsnyder, and the members of my staff.

I would also like to thank all of you for your continued patience and understanding as we worked through the details of our contingency plan.

To our many federal worker friends and runners, our thoughts are with you.

Thank you and I hope to see you May 1.
