WELCOME TO THE AREA IV NEWSLETTER

As you have noticed, both the Area IV Website and the monthly Newsletter are in the process of receiving makeovers that will be both cosmetic and content related. There is also different leadership at the helm of these two entities who have the huge shoes of departing Area IV Communications Director Cynthia Wiseman to fill. Cynthia has done a great job, and we wish her luck as she pursues her busy "real" life!

Nora Endzel has taken over the Area IV Website duties. When asked for a short introductory bio for those who don't know her, this was her response.

"I've been eventing for about 7 or 8 years with my beloved mare "Nila" who I've had for over 10 years.  We have fun at the lower levels but hope to go Training one day (before I'm 30!).  I also have a lovely retired CCI** mare Ala Mode, "Tilly," who I'm hoping to breed a little superstar out of.  Fingers crossed for a happy healthy foal next year (I promise lots of pictures)!  By day I work at my friend's IT company which translates well to my website duties.  We implement and manage IT solutions for clients including the Democratic National Committee and Obama for America.  By night I'm turning my useless undergrad degree in Equine Training & Instruction (yep, really have a bachelor's in that) into a law degree at DePaul University College of Law, graduating May, 2012.  I'm very excited to be able to help with the Area IV website and Katie and I have lots of great ideas that you'll see rolled out over the next few weeks and months.  If you see a too-tall rider on a little bay mare sporting navy and baby blue at the local events please stop us and say hello!"

I'm Katie Lindsay and I'll be taking over putting out the Area IV Newsletter which will come in a monthly e blast. I've been kicking around the event world for more years than I care to admit, and I'm probably best known as the organizer of the late Maui Jim Horse Trials and current organizer of the Wayne Eventing Derbies. I'm an FEI Chief Steward and a former Eventing Technical Delegate and have sat on most every National committee for USEA and USEF. I've written for many equine related magazines and currently blog on an irregular basis for Eventing Nation. Being awarded the Wofford Cup at the USEA Annual Meeting last year was probably the coolest thing that's ever happened to me!

Some of the changes that will be happening may seem odd at first, but hopefully will make sense with familiarity. The website, which will be hosted by USEA, will be the main informational tool for events, clinics, camps and late breaking news. It will also have downloadable forms, quick links, contact lists, calendars and resources. It will feature specific sections for Young and Adult Riders. The Newsletter will have a slightly more "chatty" tone. The first edition will feature Area IV riders who have made an impact on the national eventing scene. Also in the planning stage is a brief monthly Veterinarian's Corner and a short, hopefully useful Training Tip section. This is also the venue for organizers, trainers, volunteers and riders to give shout outs about special things and people that they encounter. Proud of something that happened at your event? Work with a person who deserves some eventing love? Write it up and submit it for the Newsletter. Hopefully, this will become a truly interactive offering!

Now on to this month's chatter!

THE VOICE OF AREA IV

In my frequent travels around the national eventing world. I have been struck with the pervasive presence of Area IV members past and present. In membership numbers, we are a comparatively small Area. Even though we offer a comfortable number of healthy events, following the loss of a couple of our larger competitions, we have assumed a relatively low profile on the national scene. Nonetheless our riders are strongly represented at the major eastern events, and those of us who for whatever reason opt to live in the middle of the country can take pride in this.

At the AEC's last year in Georgia, two divisions were won by Area IV'ers Ashley Guidry and Kerry Sachs, and Heather Jans went home with a Reserve Championship. All three riders are from Illinois. Transplanted "locals" include Jon Holling, (WI), Allison Springer, (IL), and Becky Holder (KS and MN). Young Riders Michelle Mercier and Meghan O'Donaghue from Illinois and Lexi Scovill from Wisconsin frequently appear  on the top third of the results charts in the East. Meghan competed at Jersey Fresh earlier this month as did Kaytlin McMorris (whose parents organize the Fox River Valley Horse Trials) and Leslie Chelstrom, formerly from Wisconsin. Dana Widstrand, Coren Morgan and Lauren Kieffer are more of "our" riders competing in the East, and rising event star Jennie Brannigan started life in Galena, Illinois and rode her first event at a now defunct Chicago area event on her pony. She was so into the sport that she had pasted pink polka dots on her breeches to match her cross country attire. She's come a very long way! At Jersey I learned that even (former) Australian superstar Boyd Martin has an Area IV connection. His mother came from Springfield, Illinois.

If I've left out any names in the paragraph above, I apologize!

(A good way to keep track of these individuals' doings is to go to www.eventingnation.com It's fun and current!)

THIS MONTH'S TRAINER TIP

All work and no play makes Dobbin a neurotic burn out! This is the season of preparing your horse and yourself for the upcoming competitions. Be sure to allow adequate time for play. Spend time every so often enjoying a long hack in the country on the buckle. Give your best four legged friend some days off now for constructive grazing and sunbathing time. It'll do wonders for his mental health - and yours!

YOUR HORSE'S HEALTH UPDATE - EHV-1

The American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) recommends The UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine Website as a well organized and thoughtful summary of the current EHV-1 problem. Please visit this site for news and commentary on the EHV-1 outbreak and ask your vet if you have specific questions as you plan your travels for this show season.
