Area IV Director of Communications Needed
Cynthia Wiseman, Area IV Director of Communications since 2006, has submitted her resignation.

Our website is in a time of transition to a new template-based website hosted by USEA. The USEA template is almost ready to rock and roll and Cynthia feels that is the perfect time to find someone to take over her responsibilities. The template has been designed so that even a non-tech person will be able to manage the site.

In addition to serving as the Area IV webmaster, the Director of Communications is responsible for publishing electronic newsletters 1-2x per month.

Interested parties should contact John Clarke, Area IV Chairman at areachairman@usea4.org
Area IV Inaugurates Star Volunteer Award
USEA Area IV has inaugurated a Volunteer program that rewards one of the most valuable helpers at a Horse Trials with their very own hand-painted mug.

Each one is hand-painted and fired by the well-known Oklahoma painter & ceramics artist, Kathy Wright, so is a unique memento of a great day out volunteering at one of our shows. Organizers & TDs will choose the person who has contributed the most to the overall running of the show.

The volunteers, who contributed the most to Area IV in 2010, are the Dunnabeck team who ran our Championships. They were proposed for a Governor's Cup after the incredible recovery they made from the tornado that flattened the venue the previous year. We will be sending a round dozen of the mugs in appreciation of their efforts.
Situations Vacant: ICP Focal & Affiliates Representative Needed
The USEA will be rolling out some new programs and services this year so Area IV will need additional volunteers to help bring them to us and provide the necessary feedback back up to HQ.

Instructor Certification Program (ICP) Focal
The ICP has probably done more to encourage safe, correct instruction than anything else. The USEA now wants to improve support to Instructors as well as promote the ICP itself. They have asked all the Areas to appoint someone to act as an information source and help get the courses & clinics needed . You do not have to be an ICP Instructor yourself but it would be an advantage to have participated in the program.

Affiliates Representative
One of the strengths of Area IV are our Affiliate organizations that provide training, advice & friendship all across the region. They have a unique view of what our sport needs and the Area IV Council needs someone to speak on their behalf.

Persons interested in either of these positions are asked to send an outline of their experience and ideas for the post to the Area IV Chair at areaivchair2010@yahoo.com

Notes from the Area IV Chairman: Safety & Security
The recent change to the "hat rule", EV114, has, made us all wear our helmets more - a good thing - but modern helmets are not hats, they're a safety system that happens to protect our brain. The whole effect relies on a correct fit of both the helmet and the chin strap that holds it in position despite our movements. A loose strap may seem better but if the helmet slips forward you won't be able to see and if it slips back during a fall the additional bulk can cause neck injuries. Make sure your helmet fits snuggly and can't slide around - it will be more comfortable too.

So-called "Air Jackets" are now in vogue and there is no denying that they may help in certain kinds of falls but, again, a correct fit is the key. Firstly, of course, it must fit you and the equipment you ride in. By this is meant that you should check that when the vest inflates it doesn't catch on other parts of your gear like your required safety vest under the Air Vest or that the neck bag or tube doesn't hit the back of your helmet and either force it over your eyes or worse. If you're wearing it in competition, make sure that the pinny is either tied loose enough for inflation or will break away like the paper ones otherwise the Vest will still inflate but it will squeeze you such that you may not be able to breathe. The Jacket must also fit your horse & saddle allowing sufficient length in the tether for you to move around in the saddle (some vests have fired when sitting back for a drop fence) but also to fire the CO2 cylinder in the vest such that it will be fully inflated when you hit the ground or obstacle. Finally, make sure you know how to deflate it if you need to - some claim to automatically do so after a certain time but others have been reported as keeping inflated despite the rider's (and others) best efforts.

At a recent Horse Trial (not in our Area), seven saddles were stolen overnight. The ones taken (new, custom, high-end) and the randomness of the victims probably rule out a spur of the moment or spite theft and point to a knowledgeable, targeted crime by a professional thief. We all would like to think that it could not happen here but, it is in our interest to "keep the honest people honest" by securing our tack stalls & trailers at shows and taking reasonable precautions to ensure we leave with the same equipment we came with.

Wishing you all a safe, secure - and successful - 2011 Season,
John Clarke
CIC* Coming to the Fox River Valley Pony Club Horse Trials

Save the Date, June 24-26, 2011: In an effort to provide Midwest riders with qualifying competition options within the Midwest region, the FRVPCHT Advisory Board has applied for and received USEA approval for a new CIC One Star division, beginning in 2011. This development is in keeping with the FRVPCHT mission of providing the best possible competitive experience for horses, riders and trainers.

The 2010 autumn and fall preparations for the 2011 event included the clearing of some new tracks, management of existing turf, and a restorative schedule for some of the older jumps. New jumps are in the works at all levels, as are improvements to many of the systems that have been in place for decades on the property. The venue has been recently altered by the additions of a fence boundary that separates the Park District from the Forest Preserve and some new graveled parking areas, resulting in some new challenges related to stabling and parking. However, all systems are "go" and the organizers are in full swing to make the 2011 event the best ever.
