Maui Jim Eventing Derby
|
The response to the Maui Jim Eventing Derby, July 9-11, has been double what the organizers had hoped for. The unrecognized, informal competition which will take place entirely on the grounds of Lamplight Equestrian Center in Wayne, Illinois presents a unique opportunity both for riders to enjoy a weekend of fun with their horses and friends as well as the opportunity to win some attractive prizes. Several local vendors have donated prizes, USEF Technical Delegate Seema Sonnad has donated a spectacular award for the best placed Master Amateur rider on an off the track Thoroughbred, and the competition's name sponsor, Maui Jim Inc., offers both cash awards to the winners as well as certificates for the wildly popular Maui Jim sunglasses. The Illinois Dressage and Combined Training Association is the presenter of the event.
When it became evident late last year that the Maui Jim Horse Trials were destined to become a thing of the past, Mike Dalton, the CEO of Maui Jim, Inc., asked what could be done to keep up the tradition of the event within its new constraints. He generously agreed to continue his company's support of a competition designed to include both experienced riders and riders new to the sport. Read More

It's become an Area IV tradition--Catalpa Corner Charity Horse Trials (CCCHT) on the first weekend of August. This year the fun is so big it has to start in the last days of July!
Susan and Jim and all the many volunteers have been working hard to continue to improve our facility and fun event. New this year: additional land has been devoted to dressage rings, larger warm up areas and wider galloping lanes.
New courses have been developed by Ana Schravesande. The courses include more open galloping at preliminary, longer course length at training level and reversed courses for beginner novice and novice levels with extended length. New jumps have been added at all levels. The cross country course, dressage and show jumping rings are aerovated to support your horse's long-term soundness.

Adventures at an ICP Workshop
|
by Kathy Kerns, Area IV Adult Rider Coordinator
My adventure at the ICP workshops!
Okay, so Missouri doesn't exactly come to mind when one thinks of eventing meccas, but New Spring Farm in Columbia, MO, was the my destination. For the uninitiated, it is the home of one of our Athens Olympics superstars, Windfall. So it isn't the backwoods, although Tim and Cheryl Holecamps' house is nestled in their woods.
My adventure started early Tuesday morning - arrival time was 7:30 am, and didn't end until well into Friday afternoon. And I never got back to my hotel room earlier than 8:00 any evening. The four days were packed, exhausting, but absolutely a great time!
The 4 days were actually 2 two-day workshops, one on Dressage, the other on Jumping. Another Olympian, of the human kind, Phyllis Dawson, was our teacher for both workshops. I wish I could say I sucked her brain dry, but although I tried, I was only able to assimilate a tiny portion of the vast body of knowledge Phyllis possesses. Her eye for seeing what was wrong was phenomenal, and her kindness in coaching us to see it was also incredible. I'm sure we tried her patience multiple times as we fumbled through our lessons.
