Area IV Year-End Awards & Championships
Adult Rider RibbonThe Area IV Championships were canceled due to mud and rain. The Area IV Champions at each level will be determined by points earned by Area IV residents at Area IV competitions. It will exclude points earned at competitions outside of Area IV.

The Area IV Year-End Awards (Horse of Year & Rider of Year) will be tabulated for Horses who are owned by residents of Area IV and for Riders who reside in Area IV. It will include results earned at all USEA sanctioned competitions.

The USEA is working diligently to provide Area IV with our Leaderboard data. They are tabulating year end points for Area IV residents using the USEA competition results database and unfortunately have encountered some technical difficulties during the process.  The USEA hopes to have Area IV standings available to us no later than January 15th.

Standings will be posted on the USEA Area IV website (www.usea4.org) when they are received. Subscribers to the Area IV newsletter will receive an email when they are posted.

Thank you for your patience.
Introducing "Team Area IV"
One of the great things about eventing in Area IV is the number of people who step forward to help organize & make our shared experience even better. This is particularly true when a "new boy" takes over and needs to rely on the seasoned veterans.

Kathy Kerns continues as our Adult Rider Coordinator and has overseen our successful AR Lowest Score series. More recently Kathy has set up our mailing list which had to be retooled as the server was changed - so if you received this through your e-mail you have Kathy to thank.

For Young Riders, we have not one but two people - Bernard Morauw and Hallie Glennie continue as joint YR Coordinators. Apart from our usual teams for NAYRC and Mid-South, they are looking to promote our sport to other Young Eventers especially as Pony Club no longer requires all their members to ride crosscountry.

Keeping us all on the straight & narrow is our Treasurer, Sue Settler. As was made abundantly clear at the USEA Annual Meeting, our sport has to be above (IRS) reproach or we could lose our tax status - all this takes scrupulous attention to rules even more complex than the USEF's.

Also overseeing eventing is the Area Council. In addition to Elise Vandover the organizer of the Queeny Park HT, who represents all the Area organizers, we have two new members. Our new Board of Governors representative is Cathy Jones-Forsberg, an experienced eventer from the Chicago area who also holds a Level 3 Instructor rating. We are also fortunate that Beth Stoker, our previous Area Chair, has agreed to be on the Council. Rounding out the list is Cynthia Wiseman. Apart from a busy veterinary practice, Cynthia has been our Area IV webmaster and newsletter editor for several years. A special thanks is due her as our website was successfully moved over to the USEA server.

Finally, benefiting from all this experience, is yours truly, John Clarke, as the new Area Chair. I am not an active eventer but I originally learnt to ride as a child back in the West of England. I have participated in eventing, mainly on the organizational side, ever since my wife & I moved to Canada in 1985. My wife, Sue, has competed to Preliminary level and is a USDF L* Graduate currently competing at Prix St. George so I have a ready "in-house" sourceof expertise.

As this is my first article for the Area IV news, may I take this opportunity to wish you all a Happy, Safe & Successful New Year.

John Clarke, Area IV Chairman

Cross Country GPS Speed Study

Spearheaded by international event rider and Area IV resident, John Staples, and Dr. Reed Ayers, upper level event rider and a Research Assistant Professor at the Colorado School of Mines (Department of Metallurgical and Materials Science), the Cross Country GPS Speed Study aims to monitor horses and riders on the cross-country course to determine the speeds at which the courses are being negotiated and relates to both the stress placed on the horse and the overall safety of horse and rider.

Riders at competitions throughout the United States from Beginner Novice to CCI**** have participated in this study by wearing a Garmin Global Positioning System watch during their cross country run. The Garmin watch tracks the rate of travel and distance covered by the horse and rider.  The data is then downloaded into a Motion Based System to track the speed at which various obstacles were negotiated.

Some surprising data has already come to light as to the excessive speeds some riders have achieved in order to complete courses inside the time. While the study will be ongoing throughout the year coaches have already been able to use the data to educate students on the importance of pace.
