NAYRC Through Eyes of Area IV Chef d'Equipe Lei Cluff-Ryan
I flew out to Colorado on Monday before the official start to the competition. The horses except for Callie Judy's horse Irish Odyssey (otherwise known as Audie) all arrived before Jon Holling (Team Coach) and I. My first meeting of all the riders, grooms and parents would be during this week, and I have to say that everyone was wonderful and I enjoyed all of you. All the parents did a great job, whenever I needed help, I just asked for it and it happened. Special thanks must be given to Sue Slocum, parent extraordinaire. Sue drove the bulk of the riders and grooms to Colorado, was my main supporter all week, oversaw packing up at the end of a long week, and then drove everyone back. She was on the road for 24 hours. I could write an entire article on Sue's help to the team. Read More about NAYRC!

New Johnson County (KS) Plans Lack Equestrian Trails
| As some may be aware the most recent Johnson County Park acquisitions are currently in the Master Planning Process. Rieke Lake Property, Cedar Niles Park, and Sunflower Nature Park. The Johnson County Parks & Rec Dept and the Architect and Consultants presented initial designs based (according to them) on public input from the first meeting.
Although much public input was expressed at the first meeting regarding the inclusion of Equestrian Trails at The Rieke Lake Property there was no such inclusion in the preliminary design. When questioned about this the response was that there was not enough room to include at this site. The fact is the site is close to 500 acres. Many people think there is ample space for Equestrian Trails.

Calling all Thoroughbreds!
Many of us love riding Thoroughbreds because of their athleticism, mental quickness, and affordability. Now your TB can win points and recognition through the North American Series and the USDF All Breeds Program awards, sponsored by the North American Thoroughbred Society (NATBS).
"NATBS member horses are instantly on an equal footing with each other," says Nicole Dutzi of Goldolphin Farm in Kentucky. Thoroughbreds and their riders gain recognition for their efforts while competing nationally or locally. And each horse can be rewarded for excelling in the equine discipline that he or she is best at-whether in dressage, barrel racing, jumping, or other events."

USEF Updates Eventing Qualifications
One of the most pressing issues raised at the USEF/USEA Safety Summit held in Lexington, KY on June 7-8, 2008 was the need to tighten qualifications for horse and riders to move up and remain at levels of recognized competition.
The most important changes were to USEF rule EV105 which will become effective December 1, 2008, the rule redefines the establishment of qualifications at Preliminary and above and ensures that horses and riders are consistently qualified, and competent to compete at the level at which they are established.
Once a rider achieves a qualifying result at a level, horse and rider are established (qualified to compete at the level) for the remainder of that calendar year and the following year. Re-qualification will be required when the time period has expired.

Volunteers Needed at Heritage Park
MACTA Work Days: August 16/17 9am - 3pm Heritage Park. Help is needed to prepare Heritage Park for the upcoming Heritage Park Horse Trials. There will be fences to move, so if anyone has a front end loader (or forks) on a tractor or bobcat type of machinery we could use that, or trucks to help move jumps. Many jumps also need repainted or stained. The electric cords will need to be set up on stalls for fans (ie. power strips, etc.). The wash stall needs repaired/fixed and various other jobs. A few weed whips would also be welcomed! Thank you!
Volunteers for the weekend of the event (August 22-24) are also needed. If you're able to spare even just an hour, we are happy to have you!
Visit www.macta.info for more information about MACTA and the upcoming Heritage Park Horse Trials, Adult Team Challenge and Training Level 3-Day.
