USEF/USEA To Hold Eventing Safety Summitt in Lexington June 7-8

In the wake of several serious accidents to riders and horses in eventing over the last few months, USEF President David O'Connor and USEA President Kevin Baumgardner have announced that there will be a Safety Summit held in Lexington, KY on June 7-8, 2008. Statement from Kevin Baumgardner and David O'Connor.

The goal of the Summit is to bring together all those concerned about the sport - riders, coaches, veterinarians, course designers, fans - in a quest to better understand what might be contributing to these accidents and to identify and agree on steps that can be taken to better protect horses and riders.

The Summit is open to everyone and we invite all to attend. To register, Click here to register for the Summit. Please visit www.useventing.com or www.usef.org for more information.

Super Pony Theodore O'Connor Euthanized
Karen and Teddy Lexington, KY

The United States Equestrian Federation is devastated to report that Theodore O'Connor was humanely euthanized Wednesday, May 28th as a result of an injury sustained in an accident at Karen and David O'Connor's barn in The Plains, VA.

The 13-year-old eventing super pony defied odds and gravity throughout his career. Standing only 14.1 hands, the Shetland/Arabian/Thoroughbred cross gelding was the reigning Team and Individual Gold Medalist from the 2007 Pan American Games and had top six finishes at the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event in 2007 and 2008. He was the 2007 USEF/Farnam Horse of the Year and recently had been named to the USEF Short List for Eventing for the 2008 Olympic Games.

Ridden by three-time Olympic veteran Karen O'Connor, 'Teddy' made friends and picked up fans everywhere he went. Seeing was believing with Teddy as it seemed impossible to imagine that a pony of his size could do his job with such tremendous ease.

Thoughts and prayers are with Karen and David, Teddy's groom Max Corcoran, his breeder and original owner P.Wynn Norman, the rest of his owners in the Theodore O'Connor Syndicate and everyone associated with this remarkable pony.

To send thoughts to Teddy's connections please email Teddy@usef.org. The USEF will make sure your email gets to the intended recipients.

Donations Needed: Silver Bits Pony Club Suffers Losses in Tornado
The Parkersburg-New Hartford area in Iowa was hit extremely hard by a tornado on Saturday. Over 200 homes were totally destroyed including homes of two Silver Bits Pony Club families.

In addition to the total destruction suffered by the two families, several other Pony Club members have endured loss as well. Several Pony Club horses/ponies were killed in addition to the multiple horses who were injured.

Besides their homes, and everything in them, they no longer have anything ponyclub or horse related. This of course isn't even mentioning regular clothing, furniture, dishes, etc. They've lost everyting from their PC pins, to breeches to boots to halters-saddles-leadropes-pads, etc. Two ponies are in very bad condition and will need stall rest for a long time, if they survive, which means shavings, bandaging supplies, medications, etc.  Most of the SBPC members are very young and have lost all even their toy horses, etc.

Please contact Cindy Hainline at 319-361-9007  to make donations or volunteer time to help.
Timber Ridge Pony Club Horse Trials Rescheduled
Sadly we announced that the Timber Ridge Pony Club Horse Trials at Catalpa Corner, Iowa City, IA scheduled for June 1, 2008 has been cancelled and rescheduled for Sept 7, 2008 due to weather.  Eastern Iowa has not had three consecutive dry days in row making course rehabilitation from winter storms impossible and footing extreme, and more rain is predicted later this week.  We regret and apologize for your inconvenience.

However, we are encouraged by warmer weather and look forward to the Brad Hall Clinic June 15 and the recognized show August 2-3 with four divisions offered with several new cross country jumps.  This year a portion of the proceeds from all shows and schooling will benefit the Silver Bits Pony Club in central Iowa whose young members, their families and loved horses/ponies were devastated by Iowa's recent historic F5 tornado.
