| USEA Area IV Convention Wrap Up |
|
The Area IV Annual meeting has been and gone. Thank you to all of you who came!
In addition to the usual meetings for Organizers, Adult Riders and Young Riders, Dr. Karl Frees gave a lecture about tendon injuries, John Staples discussed Equine Fitness and David Goodwin discussed Rider Fitness. The speakers all enjoyed their audience and Dr. Frees was amazed that the attendees kept him talking for almost two hours!
To close a long day of meetings, Area IV held a dinner and awards banquet. About 50 people had signed up in advance for the dinner and the awards were on display. In addition to ribbons given out (1st through 10th for Overall Horse & Rider of the Year and 1st through 6th given out for each division), awards for Champion and Reserve consisted of coolers, quarter sheets (exercise rugs), leather halters with brass plates, bridle bags, garment bags, and the crowd favorite seemed to be the director's chairs. 2007 Year-End Awards

| The USEA Instructors' Certification Program in Area IV! |
Two items of great interest to those who teach eventing: 1) New Spring Farm (Tim and Cheryl Holekamp) in Columbia, MO will host the first of the pair of Instructors' Certification Program Workshops April 18-20, 2008 , necessary for ICP certification at Level I or Level II . This is the three-day Teaching of Dressage Workshop that begins the ICP process and will be followed by a Teaching of Jumping Workshop in September or October at their farm and an ICP Assessment for certification later. This first one will be held at the excellent indoor facility at William Woods University in Fulton, MO , thanks to the Equestrian Science Dept. there. Teacher: Robin Walker of Grass Lake, MI (rumored to be the best of the best at this!) Contact: Holekamp@aol.com . Those even potentially interested should notify the Holekamps soon, as this workshop is absolutely limited to eight candidate instructors, by USEA rules. 2) Due to the fact that Area IV has a marked shortage of ICP instructors (along with Areas III and IX) relative to the others, a group of concerned USEA members from across the country have pooled funds and made a donation to the USEA that will provide special reimbursement grants to the first 20 new ICP candidates living in those three Areas who complete certification at Level I or Level II, covering the $500 assessment fee for those twenty. HURRY! Contact Nancy@USeventing.com for details, after reviewing the webpage information at http://www.useventing.com/education.php?section=instructors |
| Area IV Convention: Adult Riders Meeting |
The Area IV Adult Rider program members that were present discussed what to do with this program this year. Under discussion was the fact that the program is not very active. Some of those present kicked around the idea of having an Area IV Adult Rider clinic. It was then brought up that the Area IV Adult Rider program had hosted a Jim Graham clinic and an Ian Stark clinic during the 2007 year. The problem that arose, however, was the fact that the Adult Rider program did not fill either of these clinics. At this point those present discussed what should happen this year in order to try and make this a more successful program. Those present decided that the focus for this year's program should be on trying to produce more camaraderie amongst program members. Trying to have social activities for the program members at each event in Area IV, trying to get Area IV Adult Rider members to stable next to each other at shows so that people could get to know each other, continuing on with the current Adult Rider Low Score Awards for each event during the competition season and then having year-end awards for the top 10 Adult riders of the year.
In an effort to help boost membership in the Area IV Adult Rider program Camie Stockhausen of Field Day Farm offered to put $160 on the table for an Area IV Adult Rider member to either use toward an entry fee of their choice or a clinic of their choice. All Adult Riders that have signed up for the Area IV Adult Rider program by March 31, 2008, your names will be put into a drawing and the winner will get the prize Field Day is offering.
Awards were presented at the USEA Area IV meeting to the following individuals for the 2007 Overall Adult Rider of the Year.
2007 Overall Adult Rider of the Year 1) Jamie Price 2) Maria Brazil, M.D. 3) Camie Stockhausen
4) Deanna Hertrich 5) Brigitte Kettell 6) Kristin Boerema

| Area IV Convention: Young Riders Meeting |
The Area IV Young Rider program for 2008 was discussed briefly. This year the program will be holding another camp that will be available for all level of riders. The clinicians will be Jon Holling and Allison Springer (provided they are not representing the U.S. at the Olympics). We discussed the new mentorship program that will be offered during NAJYRC, in which Young Riders that are not competing will be allowed to shadow an official during the competition so that riders learn more about what goes on behind the scenes at competitions and see if they are interested in pursuing their love of horses in that manner. The team challenges at Mid-South were also discussed briefly. Interested parties were asked to go to the Young Rider web page on the Area IV website to get the most up to date information.
Area IV Young Riders' Program has scheduled two clinics with our 2008 NAJYRC coach, Jonathan Holling. The first will be March 1-2 at Versailles Equestrian in Virgil, IL. The second will be at Hunter Oaks Farm in Bloomington, IL on May 31-June 1. Cost will be $275 with a $25 discount to Area IV Young Riders' Program Members. Stabling is additional. For those of you aiming for NAJYRC or NJYR at Midsouth, it is mandatory that you attend at least ONE of these clinics!

| Area IV Convention: Organizers Meeting |
The Organizers discussed some of the proposed rule changes that would affect them, along with common issues that face Organizers. One of the largest problems organizers face is competitors sending entries in at the last minute. There is always the worry that they will not have enough competitors at their event to cover the costs of the event and at that point trying to determine if they are better off canceling their event so they don't lose more money than they've already put out or extending the closing date in hopes of getting the required entries. One proposed rule change would allow organizers, if they extend their closing date, to charge an additional fee for entries made after the original closing date, not to exceed an amount equal to the original fee.
