| HINT # 35 Avoid Empty Calories |
WHAT ARE EMPTY CALORIES?
"Empty Calories" are foods that are high in calories but low in nutritional values. They lack health-promoting micro-nutrients like vitamins, minerals, and anti-oxidants.
Empty Calories = High Calories but Low Nutrition
Examples of foods containing mostly Empty Calories:
a. Fried chicken, potato chips, french fries and all other deep-fried foods b. Candy, soda and other sweetened packaged foods c. Wine, beer, and alcoholic beverages
d. Refined grains such as white bread, pasta, crackers, and cookies.
HOW TO AVOID EMPTY CALORIES?
1. Instead of deep-frying, use other methods of cooking. Have a baked potato rather than fries, or a piece of baked skinless chicken breast instead of the greasy fried kind.
2. Avoid sweetened drinks and canned drinks.
3. Limit alcohol consumption, o just DON'T DRINK AT ALL!!
4. Try whole grains instead of refined grains. Whole grains are packed with beneficial fiber and antioxidants. For instance, have a slice of whole-wheat bread instead of white bread. Have a bowl of whole-grain breakfast cereals or unsweetened oatmeal instead of corn flakes.
5. Snack on fruits and vegetable sticks! Say no to the cookies, pretzels, and other EMPTY no-no's. |
