Berry Gordy describes Michael Jackson as a musical genius. At ages eight, nine and ten, Gordy says Michael would spend hours alone studying the performances of master artists such as Fred Astaire, Sammy Davis, Jr., Jackie Wilson, and of course the God Father of Soul, James Brown. He would ultimately get on stage, draw something from each of them, progressing year by year until he ultimately became the most powerful and dynamic performer ever. In 1969 The Jackson Five made their first television appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show. My family and I were glued to the television. The next day throughout the black community the Jackson brothers and eleven year old Michael were the talk of the town. They had made us all so proud. Gladys Knight immediately recognized their talent and presented them with the opportunity to go on tour opening for Gladys Knight and the Pips. When the show came to Shady Grove in Maryland I was there. Wow!! Wow!! From that point on whenever Michael Jackson performed anywhere in the Washington, DC area, I was there. I was never disappointed - always spell- bound. Throughout his musical career, Jackson opened doors and paved the way for today's young performers. In 1989, the 18 month old MTV initially refused to play Jackson's Billie Jean video. MTV had a young, white suburban audience and did not believe they would take to Jackson's style of music. With pressure on them from Jackson's promoters, they finally gave in. The video was an overwhelming success as was Beat It which quickly followed and, of course, Thriller. Jackson's career took off all over the world. MTV's fame took off, the direct result of Jackson's popularity. Beyonce, Lil Wayne, Ne-Yo, Chris Brown, Usher, etc. all recognize Michael Jackson as the one who paved the way for their success. He was, indeed, a genius. Every entertainer interviewed used this word to describe his work. Everyone also described him as a very generous, loving, kind and caring person. Everyone who knew him personally respected him not just as an artist but as a human being. He is said to have contributed 300 million dollars to charity over the course of his life. This is the Michael Jackson I choose to remember. The media will continue its tabloid coverage. Surely there will be books and movies coming out on his life well into the future. In the future, I may choose to read an honestly written biography. But in this moment, I am solely focused on the person whose contributions to society left me and people all over the world feeling joyful and happy. Michael Joseph Jackson enjoy the next phase of your life -you deserve it!
