January 4th, 2008

I hope that your New Year is off to a great start and you are enjoying some great Gospel Music too! We have been so blessed to have some of the greatest talent in our state over the past couple months and it just seems to get better and better all the time! If you missed Exalting Him in Yadkinville, NC you really missed out on a great night! The groups were all turning in great performances & the preaching was just awesome!! ( That's right! I said the Preaching!) Over a dozen folks came to know Christ that night and we had a glorious time! I'll try to share more about that in a few days.

We just announced the Top 100 Songs & the Top 100 artists from Radioactive Airplay for 2007! Brian Free and Assurance had the Number 1 Song "Praying Man" and the Greenes topped the chart for most popular artist in 2007. To see and even print out a copy of the Top 100 Songs and Artists for 2007 just go to www.radioactiveairplay.com and click on the link on the top right for the Top 100 Charts!

I've been so busy being a grandpa for the past several weeks that I have gotten behind on my updates! (This one is a long one so I guess I better let you jump right in!) So here's my Native American "Uncivilized" Friend Melvin Klaudt to talk about some forgotten gems that we need to remember!

Father's Best to You My Friends!

  • The Invisible and Forgotten Jewels of Southern Gospel Music

Having the privilege of recently celebrating our 54th wedding anniversary, it got me to thinking. And for a Native American, sometimes this is dangerous. However, approaching our double nickel anniversary in 2008, I have seriously considered the blessings of this momentous time element in our lives.

Mother's Day and Father's Day cannot have the proper significance without paying due respect to the wives of the men in Southern Gospel Music. So let me nostalgically digress for a period of time.

I met Margie Terrell at a church service in Duluth, Georgia soon after moving into the metro Atlanta area in 1951. Looking for a high school to attend to further my civilization process and passing into the white majority of the south, I chose to attend Norcross High School in Norcross, Georgia where Margie Terrell was attending. To make a long story short, Margie and I secretly married two weeks before we graduated from high school. When it was finally revealed that we were married, many said it would not last.

Things happen to solidify and glue relationships together. First and foremost is the verbal promise and commitment of love that is made to each other. Secondly, the fruits of that love, children were born to our relationship. Four years after our marriage vows, our son Michael was born. Four years following our son's birth, our daughter Melody was born. Margie in jest has always said, "Those were the only two times that Melvin came home the first 8 years of our marriage".

However, as statistics prove, just making vows and having children does not mean a marriage will survive. That is why I am so blessed to have a woman like Margie to be my wife, best friend and mother of my children. For, she has been the never failing glue that has kept us together. The first 30+ years of our marriage I traveled with my family singing the message of Christ through song and instrument. God's promise that His word would not return void was evident through this time.

Many times through this period of time, the last thought was the message of Christ. For some times it seemed to be just entertainment and a job. But through my absence Margie never flinched from her responsibility to be a wife and mother. She raised our children as best she could in my absence, worked to help pay the bills and did all the other things necessary to be the best wife and mate possible.

My life as a Southern Gospel Singer is not unlike any other singer in the business of SGM. I don't think the wives of this industry get the respect, honor and plaudits they deserve. We hear and read about all the awards being handed out to those singing gospel, and rightfully so, because these are the roses given while they can be given. But for the wives sacrificing on the home front, none of these rewards would be possible.

I talk many times to old retired singers and they say, if it had not been for the sacrifices of their wives they could not have continued their desire to sing Gospel. I also talk to many wives of former gospel singers and they seem to have no second thoughts of the life they spent with famous husbands in an industry they chose to follow.

I also talk to the failed marriages of gospel singers and some say if they could turn back the clock of time, possibly things could have been done in a different manner.

For the many marriages that have survived the rigorous path of this industry, it was God fearing and faithful wives that made it happen. Let there be no mistake about it. God honored His word in songs sung by a gospel singing husband and also honored the faithfulness of a woman that said, "Until death do us part".

How do we honor these invisible jewels of Southern Gospel Music? How do we give them their due respect and gratitude for the many nights they spent by themselves, the many meals they ate with a vacant chair at the table, the many times they saw other wives going out with their husbands or other husbands playing in the yard with their kids? Do we just sit back and say they will be rewarded when they get to heaven? All through the Bible God honored women of spiritual integrity. Jesus himself ministered on a daily basis to the importance of woman while they were still alive.

I only write this to in some small way to say, "thank you wives of Southern Gospel Singing Husbands for all the sacrifices you have made over the years to see that Southern Gospel Music has stayed alive and well".

    VINE RECORDS SIGNS THE NELONS

After a three-year recording hiatus, Vine Records is pleased to announce that the Nelons are back in the studio, gearing up for a winter release.

Their new release, "You Are God" offers powerful songs of worship that target the church. "We've always felt comfortable in the church. Now that we've been leading worship at our home church for a while, we knew the time was right for a new musical direction for The Nelons," states Jason Clark, producer and tenor for The Nelons. When not leading worship for Grace Baptist Church in Powder Springs, GA, The Nelons are visiting other churches. They couple with praise teams and choirs across the country, giving the entire congregation a corporate worship experience.

"Although this is a new venture for this legendary group, fans will not be disappointed. You will hear that same tight harmony that has made the Nelons a household name amongst Southern Gospel fans," states Wayne Haun of Vine Records.

The first single, "We Speak Your Name" is already in heavy rotation in heavy markets across the country. The new single debuted at Number 1 on the Radioactive Airplay Top 100 chart. "You Are God" is scheduled for a January 29th release on Vine Records and will be distributed by Crossroads Entertainment and Marketing, Inc.

Morris's Release New Song On RadioactiveAirplay

Mt. Washington, Ky. - The Morris's latest release, "High Price To Pay For Low Livin'", has just been released to radio, exclusively through RadioactiveAirplay.

This is the third release from The Morris's self-titled recording, which features some of Nashville's most skilled session musicians, such as: Bobby All, Scott Sanders, Kelly Back, and the legendary piano player Hargus "Pig" Robbins.

"High Price To Pay..." was written by Van & Kathryn Morris and is a follow-up to the previous releases "When I Think Of What You're Doing There" and "Extreme Makeover".

"When I Think Of What You're Doing There" reached Number 1 on the Radioactive Airplay Chart in July and is listed in the Top 100 Radioactive Airplay Songs of 2007. The Morris Family is also listed in the Top 100 Radioactive Artists of 2007 as well.

According to Caraway Media Group head Charles Brady, "The Morris's have one of the best sounds in the southern/country gospel market that I have ever heard. Radio loves this sound and so do I! Add to those incredible family harmonies the unique and powerful songwriting of Van & Kathryn Morris and you have a great winning combination. The Morris's are turning out some of the best gospel music of our day. I highly recommend them!"

Dove Brothers Quartet Finishes Up New Album

The Dove Brothers Quartet were recently in the studio completing their latest release for Sonlite Records.

Titled Life, the new album promises to continue down the musical path that the group's two previous critically-acclaimed albums (Anything But Ordinary Everything But Typical and Never the Same) did - traditional male quartet harmonies with a more updated musical accompaniment.

Life is being produced by Danny Crawford (Never the Same) and executively produced by Chris White (Crossroads Music). All of the songs were arranged by Crawford and group owner McCray Dove.

Life features some of the industry's most sought-after studio musicians, including Tony Creasman, David Johnson, Jeremy Metcaff, and Danny Crawford.

In addition, the new album will feature original material from group members McCray Dove and Jerry Kelso, along with Ray Scarbrough, Greg Lindsey, Matt Rankin, and more.

GEORGE BEVERLY SHEA RECORDS WITH ERNIE COUCH & REVIVAL

EC&R was recently honored to record with sacred music legend, George Beverly Shea. Bev joined the group in recording the great classic hymn, "Haven of Rest," for EC&R's new project entitled, "Pioneer Hymns." The project is schedule to release in January, 2008, and will feature fifteen all- time-favorite hymns from the 1800s.

"As we began working on this project we tried to think of which singer best exemplified the great hymns of the church and our immediate and unanimous conclusion was, George Beverly Shea" said group owner, Ernie Couch. Ernie added,"We were delighted to have this unique opportunity, and I believe we are only the third quartet, behind the legendary Statesmen and Blackwood Brothers, to have recorded a song, for specific release, with Mr. Shea."

Jason Couch, manager for EC&R said, "George Beverly Shea at ninety-eight is still ministering and sharing the gospel through song. His voice is as strong and commanding as ever. I especially enjoyed listening to Mr. Shea share about highlights of his lengthy music career. Most will remember his more than fifty years affiliation with the Billy Graham organization, dating back to the 1940s. Through the years Bev has recorded over seventy albums, the majority for RCA records. He introduced the world to "How Great Thou Art," and composed the music to "I'd Rather Have Jesus," and I understand that he is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as being the individual who has cumulatively sung in live performance to the most people, some 220 million! What an incredible person, and yet, what a humble, and godly man."

"It was an amazing time, one I will not soon forget," injected bass singer, Matt Chaffin. "After the recording session was finished, we all went out to eat. When it came time to say grace over the meal, Mr. Shea asked

GAITHER VOCAL BAND ADDED TO 2008 NQC LINE-UP

The 2007 Southern Gospel Music Award Winning Quartet of the Year "The Gaither Vocal Band" to appear at NQC in 08.

Louisville, KY - The National Quartet Convention has announced that legendary singer/songwriter, Bill Gaither, and his popular quartet, The Gaither Vocal Band, will be among the many multi- talented recording artists scheduled to appear during the 2008 National Quartet Convention.

According to NQC Vice President, Clarke Beasley, The Gaither Vocal Band and popular quartet, Ernie Haase & Signature Sound, will present the Together Showcase on Thursday, September 11. "We are thrilled that Bill Gaither will be a part of the 2008 National Quartet Convention, and we look forward to the performances of the Gaither Vocal Band and Signature Sound," Beasley stated. "As thrilled as the NQC Board is to have them, I know our attendees and supporters will be even more thrilled be able to see these phenomenal artists on the NQC stage once again."

Sharing the Stage - West Coast Connection
One of the nice things about being a Gospel music singer is the opportunity to fellowship with other artists at joint concerts. Since we all sing at different places on Sunday mornings, it isn't often that we get to hear the talents of other singers and ministers.

I was reminded about this again last month when the quartet I sing with (the Cross Road Quartet) had the opportunity to sing a Saturday night concert with Redemption, a mixed trio based in Rancho Cucamonga, CA. This group, featuring Todd Phillips, Teresa Phillips and Linda Miller, is celebrating twelve years in ministry. The first time I heard them was when we shared the stage, and I was very impressed not only in their artistry, but also their humble, honest delivery of the Gospel message.

Groups like Redemption are a real blessing. Along with being an ordained minister and music director, Todd is a very talented musician, producer and composer, and clearly shows his love for Gospel music by hosting a different regional group every other month. The Dartts, the California Melody Boys, the Tradesmen, the Glory Gates Quartet, the Salt and Light Quartet, Evidence, the Harrisons, and the Johnson Family Quartet are just some of the many groups who have been hosted by Redemption.

This past year the Cross Road Quartet has shared the stage with Mike Franklin, Kevin Spencer and Friends, The Gospel Truth Quartet, and The Johnson Family. All of these concerts were opportunities to hear and learn from the other groups, pick up tips for more effective ministry, share in a common passion, and get exposure to a new audience. We are looking for more of this when we share a concert with Evidence, a group from Orange, CA in November.

I'd be remiss if I didn't mention another of my favorite things. After the venue is locked up and the equipment is put away, often we all get together for a long late- night dinner at a local diner, sharing fun stories and fond remembrances. I'm thankful to be part of a Gospel music fellowship!
