Enjoying Your Holidays ~ Gluten-Free Style!
by Cassie Weness, R.D., L.D.
The holidays are upon us and for
many, along with festive spirits and good cheer, they bring a lot of
stress. There are presents to buy,
parties to attend and gifts to wrap. Add
a food intolerance or allergy to the mix and you may become a Scrooge - wanting
to avoid the season all together. Take
heart, at Nutritional Weight and Wellness we deal with gluten
allergies/intolerances on a routine basis, and it does not mean you are
destined to a life of buttered rice and plain potatoes. There are more foods that do not
contain gluten than ones that do. That said beware of the highly processed
gluten-free foods that are infiltrating the market. Gluten-free cake mixes, cookies, crackers and
breads turn into a lot of sugar in our bodies and are typically loaded with
empty calories. They will do little to
truly help your body thrive.

Holiday Self-Care Tip
Remember
how those cookies got you in trouble last year? I suggest that you avoid the
cookie exchanges and spend your time in the kitchen making healthy, guilt-free
treats for your family. - Roast nuts for your family and friends.
- Experiment with
healthy dips or guacamole for veggie and fruit trays.
- Visit the olive bar at
your grocery store to sample olives.
- Try imported cheese.
- Make deviled eggs.
Healthy food can be delicious and perfect for snacking and entertaining. Think
protein, carb, and fat, not Russian tea cakes, sugar cookies and lemon bars. |

Cheers to a New Year!
"Cheers to a New Year and another chance for us to get it right." - Oprah Winfrey
Statistics show that losing weight and eating healthier are always at the top of people's New Year's resolutions. But as we all know from personal experience, these good intentions don't last much beyond the first couple of weeks in January, if that. At Nutritional Weight & Wellness, we understand that to make permanent changes people need support and education. Meeting with like-minded people for six or twelve weeks provides the support, information and strategies to life long health and wellness.
