by Kara Carper, M.A.
It's that time of the year: back to school and back to being exposed to multiple germs. This year people are taking even more precautions to make sure their families stay healthy. There is the regular old flu bug that we are familiar with, and also the H1N1 virus that is talked about daily in the media. We know that we're supposed to wash our hands frequently and cough into our arms, but are there other steps we can take to prevent, or at least diminish the length and severity of these bugs? As always, good nutrition can come to the rescue! There are certain foods to add and foods that need to be avoided to optimize the body's natural defense system.

Heading into the Holiday Season: A Word from Dar
For many of us, maintaining a healthy eating plan throughout the holidays is difficult. Often one cookie leads to another and another and another, or sometimes a piece of pie leads to sampling all the desserts at the holiday party. What can you do when you know you have these vulnerabilities and temptation is everywhere you turn? As a nutritionist, I believe that education and support are the only answers. People who attend classes and individual nutrition sessions are able to maintain a healthy eating plan during the holiday season. Rather than feeling deprived because they missed a dessert, they actually have a sense of well-being and accomplishment. I invite you to create a self-care plan this holiday season. Join one of these classes, see your favorite nutritionist or do both.
The Weight & Wellness classes offer six weeks of information and support right when you need it most-in November and December. If you need extra motivation, support and strategies to get you through the holiday season, I invite you to join the Weight & Wellness class in the location that's most convenient for you. One class each week can make all the difference. You are not in this alone. To help, we're offering group discounts, see coupon below.

Did you notice that Halloween candy started showing up in the stores at the end of August? Did you buy early so you wouldn't have to worry about it later, only to discover that the candy mysteriously disappeared within a week? If you feel obligated to offer candy, but don't want to fall into the Halloween candy trap by eating it yourself, then try roasting healthy nuts as an alternative. This tasty, crunchy snack will satisfy you and help curb the munchies.
