    by Kara Caper, M.A.

Anxiety is a common problem these days and more people seem to be talking about being anxious, depressed, stressed out and having panic attacks. What is causing us to be so anxious? Is it our busy lives, work, families, obligations, the economy? Some of these things may be out of our control, but there is one thing we can control that can help manage stress and reduce anxiety - you guessed it, nutrition.

I have struggled with both depression and anxiety and can tell you firsthand that the number one thing that will reduce symptoms for most people is keeping blood sugar balanced. What does this mean for you? It means not skipping breakfast, eating frequently throughout the day, and making sure to eat a balance of protein, complex carbohydrates and healthy fat at each meal or snack. We are all in a hurry and running out the door in the morning, so it's tempting to skip breakfast, have a cup of coffee, and think that we will try and eat healthy the rest of the day. This is setting the stage for a day filled with anxiety and potential panic attacks.
