Greetings!
  • Menopause: Increase Zest, Decrease Pounds
  • by Darlene Kvist, Licensed Nutritionist

Today up to 70 million American women are menopausal. As a nutritionist, I have come to realize that most of these women have two major complaints: weight gain and mood swings.

If I've heard it once, I've heard it a million times, "I can live with hot flashes, night sweats and vaginal dryness, but I can't live with this fat around my middle." Further, they say, "Sometimes I'm so crabby I can't stand myself."

As a nutritionist, I often think, "She looks great, but maybe she should be concerned about osteoporosis and heart disease, cancer or diabetes." But no, it is the pounds around the middle that is the stressor. Yes, it is true that up to 75 percent of women (against their will) gain weight at menopause.

    Menopause Question Call-in Show

Let's face it: hot flashes and mood swings are not very pleasant. Have you made the connection that when you eat sugar or drink alcohol you have night sweats more frequently and wake up tired and irritable? Yes, Virginia, there is a connection between food and menopause symptoms.

This Saturday, we supply the experts: Dar Kvist, Licensed Nutritionist; Wendy Cates-Dancer, R.N. and Nutrition Counselor; and Sandy Greenquist, R.N. and Director of the Menopause Center of Minnesota. You supply the questions. This is a call-in show. Be the first in line to get your menopause questions answered by calling 651-641-1071.
