  • Protect Your Memory with Nutrition
  • Kara

    by Kara Carper, M.A.

Do you ever walk into a room and forget why you're there? Some people call these "senior moments". Maybe your memory is fine, but perhaps you know someone with Alzheimer's or dementia. Studies are showing that 50% of people who reach the age of 80 will have Alzheimer's.

My grandfather was an energetic, fit, heart-healthy man, so our family was surprised when he started showing signs of confusion and memory loss and was eventually diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. After a couple of years, the difficult decision was made to move him to a nursing home with an Alzheimer's unit. These types of floors or units are becoming more and more common in nursing homes and hospitals. He was given medication to manage the disease and shortly after, his condition worsened. It was seven long years from the first time we noticed symptoms until he passed away.

Alzheimer's is the most serious type of memory loss, but there are many other levels of mild cognitive impairment that aren't as debilitating but can negatively impact our lives. Today, we know much more about Alzheimer's and memory loss; we now know that they stem from inflammation. Nutritionally, we can put together a prevention plan to reduce inflammation and support our brains. We need to start this plan today: it's never too early or too late!

    Protect Your Memory

This week on "Dishing Up Nutrition" Dar and Christina will be discussing how which foods to avoid and which foods to eat for optimum brain function.

  • New Time for Dishing Up Nutrition
  • Great news! If you haven't heard yet, the Dishing Up Nutrition radio show has moved to 12 noon every Saturday on FM107.1. Now it should be easier to tune in and hear all the great info Dar, Wendy, Christina and guests dish out on real food nutrition. Remember if you miss a show you can always download it from our website.

  • Salmon Salad Supreme
  • This is one of my favorite recipes that is quick, tasty, and contains high amounts of Omega-3 fatty acids which can improve memory. Canned salmon is usually wild caught, which means it has high levels of the good Omega-3 fats. This can be a wonderful snack, lunch or dinner!
