    Nutrition Educator

As a parent you may ask yourself, "Why is this happening to my baby?" My mother asked that question because I had colic. As a nutritionist I recommend the same nutritional intervention that my mother used. Three weeks after she began giving me beneficial bacteria my colic disappeared like magic.

Recent research conducted in England reveals that a number of children lack sufficient beneficial bacteria, which can result in colic and acid reflux. The bacteria that is most important for digestion is bifidobacteria. Breast milk is our first source of bifidobacteria. However, sometimes-even breastfed babies need additional bifidobacteria. As a new mother, I found that supplementing my daughter's feedings with bifidobacteria stopped her colic also. about heart health from a different perspective: The key contributor to heart disease is inflammation.

Some babies do not experience colic, but they suffer from acid reflux and are put on prescription medications to manage it. Those mothers may not realize that bifidobacteria could resolve acid reflux naturally. Clinically, I have seen bifidobacteria work as well for acid reflux as it does for colic. Research shows that bifidobacteria supplementation for babies also result in up to 50% reduction in asthma, allergies and ADD.

Tune in to Dishing Up Nutrition this Saturday at 2:00 p.m. to learn more ways to improve intestinal health in children and how to feed picky eaters.

  • Protein Smoothie
  • We have many clients who love this recipe. It is great for a snack or even breakfast and kids love it!! My daughter Isabelle is a huge fan!! It is very balanced nutritionally and it has plenty of good bacteria in it from the yogurt.

  • Bifidobacteria for balanced intestinal health
  • Bifidobacteria is the same supplement my mother used 25 years ago to stop my colic. We offer a product from Metagenics called Ultra Bifidus. It comes as a fine powder that can easily be added to water or food. It has no flavor and can be started with as little as a pinch for extremely sensitive people. For most, I recommend that my clients start on 1/8 tsp of Ultra bifidus two or three times a day.
