    by Christina Swigart,
    Licensed Nutritionist

It?s February, the month of love, when hearts of all shapes and sizes are everywhere you look. As a nutritionist, I would like you to spend a few moments thinking about your own heart. You may already know that heart disease is now the leading cause of death for both men and women. In fact, the American Heart Association reported that ?nearly twice as many women in the United States die of heart disease and stroke as from all forms of cancer, including breast cancer.?

Knowing that we all need to take better care of our hearts, where do we start? You may have heard that avoiding saturated fats and red meat and getting adequate exercise are the best route to heart health. However, I would like you to think about heart health from a different perspective: The key contributor to heart disease is inflammation.

  • Heart Heathy Nutrients
  • If you are looking for extra nutrients to protect your heart, I recommend these three key supplements.

Omega-3 fatty acids: Pure fish oil is a safe and natural way to reduce cardiovascular inflammation and boost your HDL (good) cholesterol.
    Dosage: 1,000-3,000 mg per day.

Magnesium glycinate: This is one of the most important minerals for your heart. A natural muscle relaxant, magnesium helps relax your heart and reduce blood pressure.
    Dosage: 400-600 mg per day.

CoQ10: An antioxidant that gives life to your heart, CoQ10 is a great way to naturally get rid of irregular heart beats and arrhythmias. CoQ10 is essential if you are on a statin cholesterol lowering medication since those drugs deplete our natural supply of CoQ10.
    Dosage: 100-200 mg per day
