Thank You and Welcome!
By Tom Archer

THANK YOU Annette Carr for serving as the Secretary for the St. Louis Chapter of Second Wind from 2004 to 2011.

Annette came to Second Wind through something of a side door. She is not a transplant recipient, nor has she been the support person for someone who is. Annette has always believed that she was led to this organization by the power of prayer - something anybody who has been through the transplant experience knows a lot about.

I asked Annette to recall this story. "I received a prayer request for someone awaiting a lung transplant in St. Louis and their support person. I'm a bit slow sometimes, and it took a while for it to sink in that I WAS IN ST. LOUIS TOO! When I realized that perhaps I could do more than pray for them - maybe reach out to someone far from home and make their stay here more comfortable - little did I know what would await me! Thanks to that first contact, I have made friends with and shared the transplant experience with people from all over the country. I've had the opportunity to be a cheerleader at two Transplant Olympics where the gift of new life through transplant is just overwhelming. I've seen that same spirit each year at the Lung Walk, too. Through Second Wind, I have received a hundred times more than I have given - I have been witness to miracles!"

Annette continued, "I consider it an honor to be included as part of this organization, and I give thanks above for patiently leading me to answer the call of the little prayer request so many miracles ago."

Annette is the administrator of Christ Church Cathedral - St. Louis. She shares her life with her partner Jim; their floppy Labradoodle, Darcey; two grown daughters; five beautiful grandchildren and two grand dogs.

Annette is stepping down as a officer but will continue as a member of the board of directors.

Welcome Bethany Sprague Fine and thank you for accepting the position of Secretary for St. Louis Second Wind Board of Directrors.

Bethany will replace Annette Carr as secretary.  Bethany completed her first official duty by taking minutes at a Lung Walk planning meeting on Saturday, August 20, 2011.

Bethany was asked to prepare a bio for our web site and I want to share it with you.

Hello, my name is Bethany Sprague Fine. I have a BS degree in physical therapy from SUNY at Downstate Medical and a masters in Public Health from Boston University. I have worked as a physical therapist and also as an administrator of several rehabilitation departments. I had recently worked at Barnes Jewish in St. Louis and at the University of Chicago on the Lung Team. Imagine my surprise when I had a dry cough and some dizziness and was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. I even asked the Radiologist if their CAT scan lens was clean! I was flabbergasted!

I was diagnosed in January of 2009 and managed to keep up with things until the summer of 2010. I was placed on oxygen in August and began a very fast decline until I was an emergency admission for transplant. I was given 5-7 days to survive. I was listed and received lungs in time, September 26th. I had a lot of complications but am doing wonderfully now. I am so grateful to the donor (whoever they may be). I have been given a second chance at life and want to use my new time to pay it forward in anyway I can.

I am married to Stan Fine and live in a loft in downtown St. Louis. I have two wonderful children- Max who lives in Chicago and my daughter Juliet and her husband, Richard, who live in NYC.

I have many things I enjoy-my involvement in Second Wind, playing piano, reading books, and living life in general!

Service with Second Wind is always interesting, fun and rewarding. We are always looking for new Second Wind members and new board members. Please contact me if you are interested in helping the association in any way.

                                         We Remember

Monica Beuligmann

(1961 - 2011)

Monica Ann (Fields) Beuligmann, 50, of Poseyville, Indiana, born to Bob and Shirley (Elpers) Fields on April 21, 1961, in Evansville, Indiana, passed away Friday, August 19, 2011, at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Indiana with her family by her side.

She was a homemaker who loved to spend time with her husband and children. A 1979 North Posey graduate, she enjoyed volunteering at nursing homes, and was a life long member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church where she was an energetic member of the adult choir. Monica loved spending time watching her children play sports and was their biggest fan. She also was a big advocate of organ donation.

Monica was diagnosed with a rare lung disease (LAM), which caused her to receive a double lung transplant in the year 2000. After her transplant, she was fortunate enough to live 11 great years. Thanks to the donor family for their generous gift of life. Monica was transplanted at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. She was a member of Second Wind Lung Transplant Association, Inc, which is also located in St. Louis, MO.

Surviving are her husband: John Beuligmann; son: Travis Beuligmann; daughter: Mallory Beuligmann all of Poseyville, Indiana; sisters: Mary Jane (Kevin) Martin of Robards, Kentucky, Melinda (Norm) Stevens of Mt. Vernon, Indiana and Michelle (Gary) McLain of Norris City, Illinois; brothers: Mike (Mary) Fields of Evansville, Indiana and Mason (Mehrang) Fields of Oakland, California; many nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents and an infant brother Mark Fields.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Louis Second Wind Lung Transplant Association, 3440 Halliday Avenue, St. Louis, MO 63118

WOW! What a year this has turned out to be. So many touched by fire, floods, tornados, hurricane(s) coupled with the economy that is sparing no one. Through all of this we have much left to be grateful for. The following 19 Second Wind members are celebrating their October transplant gift with newfound strength and we congratulate you and your caregivers!

Memories last a lifetime...

It is the memorable events that shape our lives. Birthdays, anniversaries arrival of a baby, and the passing of a loved one are all occasions in which to remember someone special. A thoughtful way to remember that special event is by providing a donation to Second Wind in their honor or in their memory.

There are a variety of ways to make a donation to St. Louis Second Wind Lung Transplant Association, Inc, 'Second Wind', which include:

1. Unrestricted Donation: A donation to the association to assist in the growth of the association and to help achieve the association's mission.

2. Memorials: Memorials are made to Second Wind for deceased family members or friends. These donations provide a fitting acknowledgement of loved ones and provide assistance to transplant patients and their families

3. Tributes: Tributes are made in honor of someone on their transplant date, birthday, graduation, anniversary or other special occasion. These donations provide a fitting acknowledgement of loved ones and provide assistance to transplant patients and their families.

Bethany_SpragueRaffle Baskets Can Bring

Unexpected Joys of the Hunt!

We may have some young advocates! For those of us that have had children, or nieces and nephews, or just young friends, we know they love to find special things! Then, when they find special things, they "bug" their Aunts, Uncles, Grandparents, Brothers, Sisters, and anyone else about getting it for them!! What a great raffle draw :)

So, for those of you, out there, that want to do a different kind of basket, think about a kid's basket full of wonderful finds! Sure to be a great seller for us!

Thus far, we have 10 committed baskets! Thanks to everyone that has contacted me!   If you want to commit to a basket, call me at 314-608-3717 or simply email me at bethanysprague@yahoo.com. Remember, we don't expect a mega basket. Just nice stuff within a $30-$50 limit.

Thanks everyone!
