Dear Members, Family and Friends,
Checking my mail to see who may have sent me a note or a card is one of the things I look forward to every day. It doesn't have to be an expensive card or embossed stationery. The words inside are what I am tearing open the envelope to read.
The words may be a thank-you, a bit of good news, a prayer request or a prodding to get me to catch up with my letter writing. It makes no difference - they all are exciting.
Here at Second Wind we enjoy hearing from you and learning about how you are doing and what you are doing. This issue contains the messages of two notes we received since the last newsletter.
Please take a moment to drop us a line, we would love to hear from you.
Warm Regards,
Tom

| Pulmonary Rehabilitation:
Every breath brings success
The American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACPR) was founded in 1985 to help patients cope with chronic lung diseases and to improve the quality of life of patients and their families. March 14-20, 2010 is National Pulmonary Rehabilitation Week, intended to acknowledge the work of pulmonary rehabilitation professionals. The week is designed to help educate the public and healthcare professionals about the important role they play in the survival and quality of life of chronic lung disease patients.
Pulmonary rehabilitation specialists teach patients self-management techniques in order to help them stay out of the hospital. They teach patients special breathing techniques, educate patients on correct medication usage, and create exercise regimens to improve lung function. We salute the lung transplant pulmonary rehabilitation team at Barnes-Jewish Hospital for their dedication. Their quality care helps us prepare for and recover from lung transplant surgery. Remember them on their special day! Our on-site angels are:
Peggy Watts, Manager; Dottie Biggar, Supervisor; Maureen Baidy; Sandra Hooper; Sherry Seitz; Yvonne Sledge; Delana Swafford; and Larry Sylvester.

Pastor Beverly Van Hornes's message to the congregation of Trinity Episcopal Church, DeSoto, in the church's February, 2010 newsletter.
Recently we lost a member of our congregation. Betty Champlin bore her illness with courage and spunk. As I pondered how best to describe her, I remembered the wonderful words in the Book of Proverbs, sometimes titled, "A Capable Wife." If you would like to look it up, you will find it at the end of chapter thirty one. When I remember Betty I remember her as one who opened her hands to the poor and reached out her hands to the needy. As the passage goes on to say, "Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue."
I wonder if we truly understand the precious gift Betty gave us, the gift of sharing the last years of her life. Betty held nothing back. We remember her zest and we remember the last Sunday she was with us at worship. She did not hide her suffering, or pretend that it did not exist. It was painful to watch Bob's and her suffering, however through the grace of the Holy Spirit, members of the congregation were given gifts to share with the Champlins, which included transportation to and from appointments, meals, visits, haircuts and most of all many prayers.
Now we turn to the future and the year ahead of our congregation at Trinity. As Betty traveled through her challenging times with an abundance of hope, so we too approach the decisions that need to be made this year in the same courageous way. The writer/theologian Henri Nouwen wrote, "Hope prevents us from clinging to what we have and frees us to move away from the safe place and enter unknown and fearful territory."
We know we have conversations and decisions ahead of us. Years of deferred maintenance have take their toll, and our buildings are suffering. A lack of attention to giving and stewardship for many years in the past challenges the fiscal present and future of the church. Our location in the south corner of the county affects accessibility.
Yet, in the same way God blessed Betty with hope, God will bless us. 2010 will begin a time of discernment regarding the future of our congregation, a time for searching our hearts and listening to God, in prayer and worship. Betty knew that a new life awaited her, and we too know in our hearts that Resurrection means we too at Trinity will one day celebrate a glorious moment and something new will be ours.
Faithfully,
Pastor Beverly Van Horne

Second Wind Photos
By Gary Brandenburger
Second Wind is about people - ordinary people having extraordinary experiences. No offices, no cars, no equipment - just people. Almost. There's our banner signed by every transplanted member, and our quilt made from little squares of cloth created by members, depicting their transplant experiences. Oh yes, there's also boxes of t-shirts and pamphlets stored in basements. That's it. So this month's addition to our Flickr gallery consists of photos of Second Wind members present and past during a Second Wind experience - run/walk, picnic, Sunday Social and countless more. You may add to our collection your favorite photo from a Second Wind gathering. Email it to ghbrand13@yahoo.com. Please send the highest resolution file of the photo you have. Straight from the camera is best. |
