  • Sheriff C.T. Woody Recognized by The Richmond Braves and The Richmond Employment Guide®
  • President John Dixon and the members of the Central Virginia Chapter are pleased to announce that Richmond Sheriff C.T. Woody was officially recognized by the Richmond Braves and The Richmond Employment Guide® as the honoree of the Law Enforcement Community Heroes Night at The Diamond on June 7th prior to the Braves game against the Norfolk Tides.

After reviewing all the nomination forms sent in for Community Heroes Night, Sheriff C.T. Woody, Jr. of the Richmond City Sheriff's Office was selected to be honored.

Barbara Jones who nominated Sheriff Woody says that he has spent 40 years protecting the citizens of the City of Richmond, VA while taking on some of Richmond's most notorious criminals. Sheriff Woody has made thousands of arrests resulting in the conviction of some the area's most violent offenders. He also encourages the Child ID Program that has fingerprinted over 2,000 children in the past 24 months.

Sheriff Woody will be recognized on the field in a pre-game ceremony where he will get to throw out the first pitch. In addition, Scott Forquer, General Sales Manager of The Richmond Employment Guide® will present him with a Community Heroes plaque. Sheriff Woody will be featured in The Richmond Employment Guide® Community Heroes Showcase which will begin on May 26th and run through August 11th. He will have his photo and short biography featured in 3 editions of The Richmond Employment Guide®.

The Richmond Employment Guide® Community Heroes program celebrates "community heroes" - the police officers, firefighters, healthcare workers, and military personnel - who go above and beyond the call of duty and make a difference everyday in the community.

  • Retired Birmingham Chief Annetta Nunn to Work with Central Alabama WYCA
  • President Jimmie Brown and the members of the Birmingham Alabama Chapter are pleased to announce that retired City of Birmingham Police Chief Annetta Nunn has joined the YWCA staff as a Grant Coordinator/Advocate. This position stems from a new grant awarded to the YW by the Alabama Civil Justice Foundation.

During the press conference the ACJF awarded the YW with the $95,000 to further develop the Domestic Violence program in the Birmingham City Court. As the Grant Coordinator, Ms. Nunn will be responsible for organizing and assuring interagency collaborations and continuing domestic violence education for the different agencies involved in this court. As an advocate, Ms. Nunn will work to assist the victims of domestic violence with their court procedures and with any services that they may require.

The press conference featured comments from the Women's Fund, Birmingham City Court Judge Agnes Chapell, and Bob Roden, from ACJF, who shared an emotional story of how domestic violence has affected his life. ACJF then presented the YW with the $95,000 check for the new grant. Chief Nunn also spoke about her new position and the passion she brings to this new endeavor as domestic violence has affected her life as well.

For over a century, the YWCA Central Alabama has been responding to the needs of women and families. The YW's programs and services serve women and children by providing: affordable childcare for low-income families; child care and after-school enrichment programs for homeless children; affordable housing for families and seniors and a full array of domestic violence services.

Editor's note: Earlier this year, Chief Nunn received Alabama's People's Choice Award for Female Vocalist of the Year for her CD "Gospel in Blues". The proceeds benefit the YWCA's Domestic Violence Programs. Verizon Hopeline was one of the Sponsors. It is available on iTunes.
