From the Principal's Desk...
New Opportunity
January is a wonderful month - truly. I may be the only adult in my home who actually believes this - and perhaps my opinion has everything to do with the upcoming birthday I share with our almost 5-year old. Sure, on average, it's the coldest month of the year for us Northern Hemisphere folks, and that can make the best of us a bit more ornery from time-to-time. But the daylight hours are getting longer!
Put all of the above aside and consider the significance of "January": * We are free of immediate holiday expectations; * We have an open door for new opportunity; * We are given a second chance to accomplish those unfinished goals; * We have a fresh start to a new, unwritten year!
Which is why at this moment - it is important for each of us to fill this time with significant and positive experiences: emotional, physical, mental, even spiritual. A recently shared NY Times article got me thinking about this on a few levels - mainly back to my own schooling memories.
Obviously my earlier years are a bit clouded with time, but I remember the names of certain teachers and staff - and the feelings I associated with many of them. My grandmotherly, first grade teacher (who taught my whole family at one point of our lives) was the person who taught me how to read. In third grade, another teacher introduced me to other cultures when she invited foreign exchange students to speak about their countries. My favorite PE teacher always directed his infectious sense of humor at the ball and never at me. And I remember my HS Social Studies teacher's strange bulletin board displaying his airplane "sick-bag" collection - received from the travel's of his students - linking to destinations all over the world. But more importantly how he helped me grasp the connections to understand and appreciate World Geography (and traveling).
I remember all of these positive experiences my memories generate - the laughter, the learning, the successes (and challenges) - and the impact of each on my life so far. With January comes "opportunity" - And when I reflect on the above, I also want the opportunity to be a person who is positively remembered... As a husband, I want to "be there" - To be Reliable. Responsible. And supportive. To embrace "this journey". As a parent, I want to be like my father - A dad who smiles. Comforts. Guides. And enjoys being silly with my kids. As an administrator, I want to be an educator who cares. Who listens. Who remains supportive whether providing consequences or sideline cheers.
This is my moment: To refocus; To reconnect; To positively impact someone; To make the most of each new experience. What an opportunity! January truly is a wonderful month.
Happy New Year! Karl Funseth, Principal | |

Thank-you from Secret Shoppe
The Secret Shoppe Tradition Sparkled!! Thank you to all the Holiday Elves who help make Secret Shoppe a success. We are thankful for your timeless energy and effort in helping us make this tradition one to remember.
From set-up to clean-up the event was enjoyable and fun for everyone. The children's faces were priceless as they shopped, then waited patiently as their treasures were wrapped. They wrote their gift cards with love and they left grinning ear to ear hoping they can keep all the gifts a secret from their family and friends.
Thanks to all who supported and helped with the event, we could not have done it without you!
Happy New Year!
Barbara and Jenn

Thank-you from Nurse Randi and Mr. Rosica
|
Dear Buckingham School Community,
On behalf of the staff at Buckingham Elementary School, we would like extend a heartfelt thank you to the entire Buckingham Elementary Community for your participation in the annual Holiday Dinner Basket Drive and Gift Giving Tree projects. As in years past, the baskets were once again overflowing with lots of goodies, and local parents were able to provide gifts for their children this holiday season. We were able to make the holidays much brighter for 31 families this year. The overwhelming generosity and kindness exhibited by all is truly inspiring and also a testament to our wonderful school community.
Thank you once again for your support and participation in these incredibly important projects. 'Wishing all a new year filled with good health and great joy.
Sincerely,
Nurse Randi and Mr. Rosica

Book Dedications
| |
Looking for a special way to celebrate a birthday, thank a great teacher, or mark a milestone?
Book Dedications are a great idea!
What is the Book Dedication Program? A book or magazine subscription can be ordered for the Buckingham library and dedicated to a child, teacher, grandparent or to any special person. It is a nice way to honor or remember someone and support the library at the same time. You have 3 options-
1. Visit the donation tree located outside the library and select a book that our librarians would love to have in our library, 2. Purchase a favorite hardcover book and bring it to the library, or 3. Download a form from the website, complete it and hand it in to the office and we'll take care of the rest.
The Book Dedication Program expands the Buckingham library and makes someone feel very special.
What happens when you dedicate a book? * A personalized bookplate is permanently placed in the book. It is really fun for the kids to take out books that were dedicated to them, family members or friends! * The book is presented to your child (or the honored teacher) during library time. * Your child is the first person to check the book out of the library. * The dedication will be acknowledged in the monthly BEN.
BOOK DEDICATIONS ARE A GIFT TO EVERY STUDENT AT BUCKINGHAM!
To download a form, please click on the books at the top of the page and follow the link to "Book Dedication Program
