Liturgy: one of the names we give to what we do in church on Sundays. The word comes from the Greek words for people (laos) and work (ergon). Our worship then is a "public work": work of the people, by the people, and for the people. Last week those who prayed in church were ably led by Mary Engler (8:00 a.m.) and David and Linda Francis (10:00 a.m.) in this "work" and accompanied by Deacon Mary Jo, so that I might serve a new family in our church. I am grateful for their leadership and for the regular leadership of so many of you who serve in reading lessons, praying the intercessions, serving the chalice, collecting and bringing forward the gifts, welcoming newcomers and one another, and more each Sunday. Our worship is truly the work of the people for the people and the glory of God! As you celebrate the labor you give the world this weekend, include your worship and be proud.

Musical Notes Dear Ascension Youth Choir Families, With the approach of fall comes the start of another joyful season of the Ascension Youth choir. Our first rehearsal will be Wednesday, September 5, 2012. We have an exciting year coming up. The Ascension Youth Choir is open to all interested youth in the St. Croix Valley, in grades three through 12. Feel free to invite any friends. We are in the process of assembling a choir roster. If you know of anyone, third grade and up, who's interested in joining the choir, please let me know or forward all of the attached information to them. Please bring the attached contact and release form to the first rehearsal in September. You will need to fill out and sign a new release form for the 2012-2013 school year. (see the link at the end of the letter) Attendance is an important aspect of being part of the choir, not just on Sundays when the choir sings, but also for Wednesday rehearsals. I understand the busy high school schedules, but I especially appreciate the high school and junior high kids not only for their fantastic voices and musicianship but also for the leadership and coaching they provide on Wednesdays with the younger choristers. Please make every effort to attend Wednesday rehearsals. If you're unable to make rehearsals, please contact me directly to discuss your schedule. Rehearsal is every Wednesday beginning at 5:00 in the parish hall. Treats are provided in the parish hall, as usually, at 4:45 before choir. We will be serving dinner to the choristers again this year. Supper is served at 6:15. Please pick your child up between 6:30 and 6:45. More information regarding choir dinners will be coming soon. This year we are asking for a donation to cover incidental costs we incur over the year. Please give your donation to Mark Schwantes. Checks can be made out to Ascension Episcopal Church, please put 2011 Ascension Youth Choir in the memo line. Enclosed is a performance/rehearsal schedule for the first half of the year. Mark your calendars now. If you are unable to attend a performance, please let me know prior to the date. You can contact me at home, at any time (651)439-8774. Please feel free to contact Mark Schwantes at 612-910-2814 or umlmark@gmail.com regarding all scheduling questions. Mark will be at the rehearsals in September to welcome newcomers, answer questions and collect contact/release forms. It's never too late to join. Look for all e-mail communication to come from Mary Duke ( The4Dukes@q.com). I'm looking forward to another wonderful year of working with your children and helping them praise God through the beautiful music of the Ascension Youth Choir. Please feel free to contact me, at home, at any time, with questions or comments, (651)439-8774. Sincerely, Nancy Whipkey * For the Choir Schedule, Parent/Guardian Consent Form and Choir Sign up Sheet please click here

Share your Garden! With all the summer sun and rain, is your garden overflowing with beautiful vegetables and flowers? Why not share some of God's abundance with your fellow Ascensionites, especially those who are no longer able to garden? When you are tired of canning and freezing, the zucchini is out of control, you can not eat another green bean or those gorgeous flowers need to be shared, bring them to the parish hall between services. Others at Ascension are sure to enjoy your bountiful harvest! Thanks!

Lifestyle Habits Shared by the World's
Longest-Living People
-
Part two of two, from Dan Buettner's popular book, Blue Zones, 2008. (Continued from The Font dated 7/19/12.)
5. Plant Slant Eat meat if you want. Treat it as a condiment and try the leanest, finest meat you can afford. Limit it to a portion the size of a deck of cards and only twice per week. Beans, eg. fava, black, soy, lentils, are the cornerstone of centenarian diets. Nuts, a handful a day, are associated with added life expectancy.
6. Wine @ 5 Moderate drinkers outlive non-drinkers. The trick is to drink 1-2 drinks per day (preferably Sardinian Cannonau wine), with friends and/or with food. And no, you can't save up all weekend and have 14 drinks on Saturday. (Note: some health advisers now recommend "if you don't drink, don't start.")
7. Belong The vast majority of centenarians belonged to some faith-based community. It doesn't matter if you're Christian, Buddhist, Muslim, Jewish or some other religion that meets as a community. Research shows that attending faith-based services four times per month will adds to life expectancy.
8. Loved Ones First Successful centenarians put their families first. This means keeping your aging parents and grandparents nearby or in your home. (It lowers disease and mortality rates of children in the home too.) Work on being in a positive, committed relationship (which can add up to 3 years of life expectancy) and invest in your children with time and love.
9. Right Tribe The world's longest lived people chose-or were born into-social circles that supported healthy behaviors. Research shows that smoking, obesity, happiness, and even loneliness are contagious. Assessing who you hang out with, and then proactively surrounding yourself with the right friends, will do more to add years to your life than just about anything else.
And God said, Behold, I have given you every plant-yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. ~ Genesis 1:29

T'ai Chi
in the Yang style with 24 forms, is again offered by Allan LaValier. This class of T'ai Chi will begin on Tuesday, September 25 at 2:00 p.m. in the Parish Hall. Each class is one hour long. The class is appropriate for all ages. The cost for adults is $75 for 12 classes; and $60 for 12 classes for children. We will learn two forms/class and will progress so everyone can comfortably learn. It takes patience to learn this with many accompanying health benefits.
T'ai Chi is a mind-body practice characterized by a slow flow of movement. T'ai Chi enhances health and well-being through improving balance, coordination and concentration. It deeply calms the nervous system. The Yang form is the most widely-practiced form of t'ai chi in the world. It was formed in 1956 by the Chinese Sports Committee by bringing together four prominent t'ai chi teachers. Please wear loose fitting and comfortable clothing.
Allan has studied T'ai Chi with Ted Tang in Fargo, N.D. and has taught T'ai Chi at the Compass Center and other locations in the St. Croix Valley as well as in Grand Rapids, MN.
